Best Pre-amp for Bryston 4BST
I personally think that Brystons would be much improved by a tube preamp although I haven't heard them that way before. I am going to guess at your price range from the equipment you mention. If you want SS but with some liquidity and 3Dness too, ...
McIntosh 501 or 602 for Magnepan 20.1
Clipping point has a lot to do with room size. If your room is large, that last 3dB of volume can eat up a lot of Watts - even 1200! Arthur
Jolida JD100 on the way
I went by Joe's NOS tube suggestions and currently have Sylvania 5751 in mine although my pair of GE 5751 sound very good too but slightly different flavor. Great cdp, I don't think you need to do much more but to find the right pair of tubes for ...
Speaker suggestions
JM Lab Electra 926 are fantastic with McIntosh. they are very refined, fast and articulate speakers that let the McIntosh sound come through in full glory. Sam Tellig of Stereophile compared them back to back with his Quad 988 electrostats and sai...
Do materials alter frequencies and speed?
Yes, that is true.
Naim and Denson amps
I auditioned at length a pair of Densens: the 200 preamp and 300xs amp, playing Davis (French company) speakers (which i also heard with other gear and know they are pretty neutral). The Densen's have a very definite sound of their own IMO. As soo...
Do materials alter frequencies and speed?
It is funny to see how many times the same things are repeated over and over in this thread. You guys just love being on the merry-go-round no matter what way it turns! whatta riot...
conrad johnson vs Mac
If you don't like it, you can sell it for what you paid. There is no reason to be afraid to try it! Enjoy. Arthur
bi-amping question
Some amps have gain controls. My McIntosh does and it makes it easy to adjust to match another amp. This could be something you could look for. Arthur
Sub-$1000 preamp recommedations sought
A McIntosh C712. I have had 6 preamps in my system and, for the money, the C712 is fantastic. Classe CP50 is even better for a little more money. I highly recommend these two models. Arthur
Looking for quality CD changer
The 555ES is less buggy than the 333ES althought now that my 333 has been repaired, it works great. I would look into the Rotel as well. The CAL changers are aging and prone to faliures with no support from the compnay so... Anthem also had a tube...
conrad johnson vs Mac
I owned the 7100 and have heard the 2250 but I didn't compare them directly. I thought the 7100 was very good but if you are into very detailed sound, you won't like it. For both of these, you have to be careful what speakers you pair with them - ...
Economy amps from Channel, Nixon, etc?
Cdc: Don't get me wrong - I think most Adcom amps are not very good, expecially the 555 mk2 which I thought was total crap. But, the 545mk2 for whatever reason, sounds excellent with very little grain. My McIntosh amp is better but the 545 was the...
Do materials alter frequencies and speed?
Gregm is right. Dynamics involves several things - not just dynamic range which is noise floor related. I was referring to slew rates but typically, cables have less impact on slew than p-n junctions and circuit bandwidth so the point is academic....
Distortion with Jolida JD100
Last night I decided to make another comparison test. I turned up the volume to where I averaged 100dB at the listening chair (which is as loud as I can stand it) and everything was crystal clear. I then put the same CDs into my Sony and there was...
