McIntosh (MC601) amplifier overheating problem
Emails between me and McIntosh are obviously still ongoing. Now please go away, again. The point of the post was to ask if anyone else has had an overheating problem yet. Thanks to any who can offer relevant input.
McIntosh (MC601) amplifier overheating problem
Good grief, you again.  If you have doubts about my understanding of McIntosh, I suggest you read the 1000+ posts of mine from 15 years ago.  Until then, stop your useless assumptions. What I am presenting here is reality.  As I've already stated, ...
McIntosh (MC601) amplifier overheating problem
McIntosh has gone silent in my attempts to get them to help!  Ayre took back their amps, and even sent out an RMA for shipping them back (Charlie posted in another forum about it), whether they were under warranty or not.  But McIntosh apparently ...

That's right.
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
My point was that one way or another, you do need gain, no matter what you want to call it, or which box you think it should be in, or not be in. Most amps have 2 or 3 stages of gain, even if you think there’s only one. Also, a volume control will...
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
Hi PhomchickIf you have enough gain, drive, and power bandwidth from one single amplifier stage, then that's great.  Like I said, it's up to the human in the feedback loop to make the call. But to be fair, you most likely have more than one stage o...
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
Hi OPThe gain control is varying the tube's circuit gain.  The volume control varies the level of the input signal.  They are completely different animals. You can just put the gain control at some random point like 3:00, but is that the optimal po...
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
Hi GeorgeYou are making an assumption in your last statement:  That an impedance value is all that matters.Unfortunately, the universe is not quite that simple.  The type of output stage that provides the "100 Ohms" impedance (not resistance...) p...
McIntosh (MC601) amplifier overheating problem
Ok, now I remember why I quit posting here years ago.  I am an electrical engineer.  I read the repair order.  I design amplifiers.  The issue is bad output transistors.  They have repaired it twice by replacing them twice.  But there are like 4 d...
McIntosh (MC601) amplifier overheating problem
They were repaired at a factory service center.  I know exactly what the problem is.  Thanks

An active preamp is an active buffer due to its gain, which largely resolves the issues of passive buffers.  Lots of circuits in the world have an active buffer to better mate an input to an output stage. A stereo system is no different.  I have y...
What speakers go best with a Mcintosh MC240
Another thing is be aware that the capacitors in there are 50 years old and their typical life expectancy is about 30 years.... Make sure your fuse is no more than 3.15A in case one shorts. Also be sure the line voltage switch is set to 125V and no...
What speakers go best with a Mcintosh MC240
I have a MC240 myself. Definitely try it with 2CEs - might work quite well actually. It's more powerful that the 40W suggests, especially with new power supply capacitors. But if it isn't powerful enough, it will sound soft. Bookshelf/monitor spea...

The Audiomat Reference 10 is magnificent sounding and doesn't seem to run as hot as some others of similar power.
