Loudspeaker sensitivity and dynamics: are the two inexorably linked?
In my experience there is no direct correlation at all. I own a pair of Thiel CS6 speakers which are some of the least sensitive speakers out there (86 dB) and I drive them with a Krell KSA 300S. I've been to 3 audio shows (AXPONA, Tampa, and PAF)...
Help me select few vinyl LPs
I checked and Music Direct does not offer international shipping but it looks like Acoustic Sounds does offer FedEx International Economy shipping. You can sort by 45 rpm records on Acoustic Sounds website and you will see quite a few titles. Her...
Why Don’t You Post Your System on Your Profile?
In my case I haven't posted my system largely because of inertia and a little embarrassment. I have looked at several member's system and I appreciate that they took the time to photograph and detail them. I have 4 racks of components and my cabl...
Can you have too much speaker presence?
I've heard some pretty impressive stand mount "small" speakers at a few audio shows (TAD and Raidho are two examples) that outperformed many larger speakers. If you accept the Stereophile definition (thanks Rickd1225) then I completely disagree wi...
DAC UPGRADE QUESTION
In a different Agon thread about DACs (there are multitudes) a member cited a video from Pearl Acoustics dealing with the question of whether DACS sound the same. I thought it was a thoughtful exercise and he minimized the hype. https://www.youtub...
List some of your favorite live Jazz recordings
I'll recommend just one and it happens to be pretty much the best live jazz recording in my collection. I use this disc to blow away friends who have never heard a good system. One of my coworkers a few years ago sat in the prime seat and was lite...
Is it all phasing or is it something more?
Previous responses have hinted at this but didn't quite get there. Stream the movie again and wire your speakers out of phase and see what happens. It sounds like the stereo soundtrack may be out of phase and it is easy to test this.
Amplifier considerations, PrmaLuna EVO 400 versus ARC Reference 160 S. Is ARC worth it?
There is another factor here you should consider - Pride of Ownership. If you lust for the ARC amps and you will always be a little sad and dissatisfied that you don't own them then go ahead and spend the damn money. There's a good chance that you...
What speaker could safely be ordered without hearing it first?
I can't hardly imagine buying a new (unused) expensive pair of speakers ($10k+) without hearing them first - or at least a model by the same manufacturer. If someone has a budget like this then they should be able to swing going to an audio show o...
How Do Amps Affect Soundstage?
I highly recommend to anyone in this hobby that they commit part of their upgrade budget and go to an audio show (I've been to AXPONA, Florida, and Pacific Audio Fest). You will come away with many of your preconceptions broken or severely damaged...
A Black Box to Solve Everything
@koestner  I have a BSG QOL Signal Completion processor in my system and I use it most of the time. It is not adjustable and I would not describe it as adding any sort of tube distortion. It affects the phase information in the signal and adds de...
When Will the DAC Singularity Be Reached?
I have two CD players (both decode HDCD), one Krell CD250/2 from around 2000 and an Emotiva ERC-3 from around 2015. Also have one SACD player, a Marantz SA KI Ruby from around 2018. I have 3 DACs, a Resolution Audio Quantum from the late 90’s, a P...
Questions on Dedicated 20 amp home wiring
I've been looking into this because we are just about ready to begin construction on a new house. Here is a link and a couple specific suggestions. 1. One of the big factors you are trying to manage is the voltage at your outlet. This is a functi...
Buying Used Equipment on the Internet
Wow. Great advice here. I've been buying and selling gear for 40 years and most of my system I bought used or on closeout. Here's a few points that I didn't see mentioned above. 1. Buying used gear and/or gear that is considerably less than full ...
Magico's M9
I don't begrudge rich people spending their money on luxury goods, particularly items that are made in the USA by companies that hire skilled craftsmen, pay them a living wage, and pay US taxes. I would rather they go that than just leave it in th...
