upgrade ARC SP-8
I would sell the SP-8 and get a used SP-16and buy the phono stage for an extra $400.00 .Don't get me wrong the SP-8 is great I use to own one,but its getting up their in age and to many things may go wrong with it.
What makes one good amp sound better than another?
As stated from previos posts YOU MUST GIVE TUBE AMPS A TRY.The Matin Logans will come to life with a ARC VT-60 if hooked up correctly or a ARC VT-100.Good Luck
Sonic frontiers sfs 80 or 160
I have the Quest Z and am happy with using my ARC VT-60as long as it is biwired and you use all the 4 ohm tap of the ARC VT-60 your fine, but if you try driving them any other way they simply run out of gas and won't pump out hardly any bass at all.
tube amp dilemma with electrostats
I originally drove Martin Logan CLS's with Dynaco Mk3'swhich were 60 watt mono amps. That combination was simply magical, until my Dynaco's bit the farm that is.But frommy experience you can get very close to the sound you liked with the ARC Classic...

Can the AR VT100 adequately drive the sophia
I have the Martin Logan Quest Z's driving the smallerARC VT-60 it is biwired per Lenords instructionsfrom ARC utilizing the full tap from the 4 ohm transformerof the amp. This speaker can dip down from 2 to 3 ohmsand I have no problems thus far.
The best speaker you ever heard?
Martin Logan Grand Slamm.I heard when they first came out at a Stereophile Show. I think at the time they cost $70,000.00 a pair. They had a pair of these huge woofer towers with 6 12 inch drivers as well.Amazing transparency, speed and slamm.
