Celebrities A/V systems - any interest?
OK ... who really cares. I'd file any such article in the same round receptacle that I'd put Robin Leach and his antics. Fabio's house, pets, stereo, pool, kitchen, cars and LIFE have no influence on me, nor does any other celeb. I looked at the p...
Most Tedius Part of Audiodom Setup/Tweak/DIY ?
Crappy job #1 is running hidden speaker cables for the surrounds in the HT setup. The deal in our house is that I can have as many speakers as I want - just don't let me see the wires. Snaking cable though basement, crawl space, attic and stud cav...
I don't remember much, but I remember......
First LP is a memory too faded to recall. I do remember my first Pioneer table, and how the Grado I had odered to go with it took what seemed like weeks to show up ( I was a ripe old 13 at the time). My first CD ... I was 15 and the first gen 2 pl...
Burning question regarding upgrading paths
1 - Start over. I am in the middle of this answer right now. The desire to sit and listen has become a central part of our lives again. We have dusted off parts of the library that have been untouched for years.2 - Beginner's mind is an elusive st...
Girlfriends and wifes, how do YOU cope?
1 - get her into the sound of the system (even if you have to listen to horrid eighties music).2 - make small changes on a regular basis - and ask her to give her opinion of the changes they make. 3 - choose a part of your system that you can roll...
Audiogon Grading Scale - the gold standard?
I have had two expierences on Ebay, both of which left a somewhat bad taste in my mouth. I bought a trombone that was described as in excellent playing condition ... long story short the horn is unplayable. I also bought an Adcom 585 amp. That uni...
Anyone ever sold off their dream system and why?
In the past month I have torn up what was supposed to be a system to last me years. Why? I have no idea. But in the end I think that I have actually raised performance in some ways.Old - CAL Icon MkII - AQ Topaz - CJ Premier 2 - MIT MusiChord - Ad...
best sub for both HT and 2 channel audio for 500 bucks
Swampwalker is right ... and I'll add that if you have crushing bass in your mains, leave the sub out of the music equation unless you have some perverse need for all that bass. I have always maintained that a sub is the hardest addition you can m...
Audio Recession
My company builds high end toys for the rich, and we too have been affected. The sales are down but not gone. I feel that the consumer is in a position of strength, and we as sellers need to work harder to keep every deal alive. There is a differe...
Any one ever tried building a turntable or tone arm?
I have yet to roll my own table ... I have an old AR table that is slated to be the donor for my first experiment. I'd appreciate URLs to learn more about the kits that you mention. With my first child on the way, my play money is now college fund...
monitor w/ bass?
B&W - silver signature (WOW!) or any of the CDM-1 incarnations .... or better, N805s. All have good bass, the Silver Signatures will blow you away. (they should at the price) I own CDMs and find that a higher current amp brings the bass to lif...
i want to buy a new system
Good answer!!! I second the B&W and pioneer combo and also add that you may want to look used for a Pioneer Elite receiver (even if it stretches your budget). Stay away from 'Theatre in a Box' solutions (Sony, Bose etc). Good luck.
Should 2nd. Buyer Receive Guarantee ?
What about this? The manufacturer sells product to a dealer, the dealer sells the equipment and showcases it in his test rooms. The dealer orders new product on a continuing basis and PAYS HIS INVOICE TO THE MANUFACTURER ON TIME. Products sold thr...
Should 2nd. Buyer Receive Guarantee ?
As a manufacturer, I can see good reason to discontinue warranty to 2nd owner. There are just too many places for a dishonest person to take advantage of transferable warranty. Companies that transfer warranty are probably builing into the cost of...
Best speaker under $500
The stage and Maggies are great speakers. I will now beat the drum for the B&W CDM-1 ... used can be found in your range ... yes they need stands, and won't really sing to full potential without a good bit of amp driving them. When I bought mi...
