The Four Tops: "Just Walk Away Renee" (original by The Left Banke). Unusual for me to like equally two completely different interpretations of a song (in this case a great one), but, hey, it’s The Four Tops!

The Band: "Long Black Veil" (original by Lefty Frizzell). What other Rock ’n’ Roll band could possibly do this song?!

The Band: "I Shall Be Released" (original sung by Bob Dylan and played by The Hawks in The Basement Tapes). The Band’s version benefits greatly from pianist Richard Manuel’s falsetto vocal, which Eric Clapton has described as heartbreaking. It truly is.

The Yardbirds: "Train Kept A-Rollin’’’ (original by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951, but The Yardbirds copped it from 50’s Rockabillies The Rock ’n’ Roll Trio, whom Jeff Beck idolized).

Lucinda Williams: This Sweet Old World (Lucinda’s 2017 re-recording of her 1992 Sweet Old World album). Muchas betta, imo.

Joan Osborne: "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" (fantastic original by Jimmy Ruffin).

Joan Osborne: "Shake Your Hips" (original by Slim Harpo)

Bobby Fuller Four: "Loves Made A Fool Of You" (original by Buddy Holly).

Phil Seymour: "Let Her Dance" (original by The Bobby Fuller Four).

Buddy Miller: "That's How I Got To Memphis" (Original by Tom T. Hall).

Kasey Chambers: "No Time To Cry" (original by Iris Dement).

Mink DeVille: "Cadillac Walk" (original by Moon Martin).

Dave Edmunds: "Let It Be Me" (original by The Everly Brothers). Dave has covered many other songs, often bettering the original.

The Remains! Good one Slaw. I’ve always loved The Beau Brummels’ version of the Don Gibson classic "Oh Lonesome Me", which I much prefer to Neil Youngs odd take on the song. I recently for the first time heard Marshall Crenshaws recording of Dylans "My Back Pages". It is absolutely fantastic, even better than The Byrds version, and that’s really saying something.
Yeah, great one Slaw. My all-time favorite has gotta be "I hear You Knockin" by Dave Edmunds. The original was by Smiley Lewis, though Fats Domino also did it. Edmunds' guitar solo in his version is absolutely killer---he creates the greatest tension-and-release I've ever heard in music, very sexual.
