XLR Interconnect as digital cable

I am aware of the problems doing this with RCA interconnects vs. digital RCA coax. Do the same problems apply with an XLR? Thanks

Also, not all xlr terminated cables are balanced. I'm not sure about this, but if you use unbalanced cables, it may do damage.
