Had my MSB Discrete DAC connected to a Benchmark HPA4 pre then into my Benchmark Amp. Then tried the DAC direct to the Amp using the DAC volume control. No difference. In a digital only system a pre is a waste of money. Put the funds towards a better DAC with a volume control. I now have my MSB direct to my Accuphase amp which I set at the lowest gain allowing me to set the DAC volume at -16db near the top of its range. MSB said running at -30 or higher eliminates any potential digital volume control issues.
Will a high quality preamp really make a difference in sound?? Also speaker cable
Will a quality preamp make my system sound better? And speaker cable...seems like everything I read people are split on this subject. My local hifi store brought up a good point; they said that the only thing between your amp and your speakers are the cable. Very good point and I'm inclined to believe it. Don't want to spend a fortune but don't want cheap cable either. Thoughts/ recommendations? Thank you in advance.
