Why so many Gold CDs for sale?

I can't help but notice that a large number of gold cds are showing up for sale. Is it safe to assume that either new SACD or DVD-A relaases of the same music is superior (or at least cheaper and equal in sound quality) to gold pressings?
I notice some gold pressings are being released in the SACD format so perhaps this represents the best of both worlds.
