Hey Slaw,
"What a Killer!!!!!"
"Cortez the Killer" is one of my all time favorite songs, PERIOD! The Built to Spill version is indeed excellente’.
Last Friday night one of my neighbors was playing in the bar at my local hockey club. Half way through the set he ripped off a righteous version of the song. I had already had a few beers. It was outstanding.......
But I still prefer Neil Young’s version on Live Rust. I just think Neil’s voice adds something to the feel of the song.
Happy Weekend to All. Enjoy! |
slaw,
Last time I saw Rush, Blue Oyster Cult opened.
That would have been cool. Any idea when? I've seen RUSH many times since 1977, And I've seen BOC back in their heyday. Both put on MONSTER shows, IMHO. |
slaw,
I love "Crash and Burn". I saw, and met, Pat Travers Band back in the day when they opened for RUSH. Good times. "Their version of "Boom, Boom, Out Go The Lights" live is outstanding.
|
slaw,
You're on a roll. Keep it up.....
I like your Bruce Cockburn pick. Check this out: I've got tickets to see Bruce Cockburn in June at The Fur Peace Ranch. If you've never heard of it, check it out on line. Interesting place for music lovers, to say the least. The concert hall seats 200 people. Up close and personal. Just the way I like it..... |
slaw,
Is the Beatles you found on yellow vinyl???
Nope, I think that's a different one, or maybe just an alternate version of the same recording. |
I heard something on Radio Paradise yesterday that blew my mind. Had to go to the record store and pick it up today. Just home and played it and LOVE IT!
The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - 1999 REMIX - Songtrack LP. The remixed long version of "It's All Too Much" is absolutely killer, IMHO. I know it might be blasphemy for true Beatles aficionados, but I really like this remixed compilation LP. The sound quality is outstanding and it sounds almost contemporary verses the originals.
I'm diggin' it. And you say? |
Had an impromptu get-together of half of my music club tonight. Played some good tunes that turned into an Elvis Costello Love fest. Here are some of the highlights:
The Beatles - "It’s All Too Much" long version and "Hey Bulldog" from Yellow Submarine Soundtracks LP
The Bears - "Fear is Never Boring"
Mark-Almond Band Live - "The City"
Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express - "Compared to What" and "Inner City Blues"
Smithereens - "Blood and Roses"
Shovels and Rope - "Eric’s Birthday" and "This Ride" from Little Seeds
Elvis Costello - "Almost Blue" from Imperial Bedroom (We’re Seeing EC this Summer)
Elvis Costello - "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" from the MTV Unplugged CD
Elvis Costello - "At The Other End of The Telescope", "All This Useless Beauty", "Complicated Shadows" and "Why Can’t a Man Stand Alone" from All This Useless Beauty
And the closer was a very Beatlesque "1967" from Adrian Belew’s Mister Music Head
It was a great impromptu evening of music.
Happy Daylight Saving Time to Everyone.............
|
James Mcmurtry and the Heartless Bastards - "Live in Aught Three"
|
Neutral Milk Hotel - "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" |
|
Melt-Banana - "Fetch"
Not something I could listen to daily. But interesting to hear once in a while. |
I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record (well, actually like a continuous audio stream), but this morning I'm listening to Radio Paradise's internet radio stream (Again!). I love the eclectic mix. They just played Two Cello's version of "Hurt" followed by Led Zeppelin - "Heartbreaker", then Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - "All in a Day". Who does that?........... :~) I've found so much new music on Radio Paradise. I've started using Shazam just to keep a running record of the new music I hear, and want to buy, while listening to RP.
Seriously, for me, for passive listening, Radio Paradise is currently my favorite music source, bar none. It ain't bad for active listing either. I find the sound quality at 320kbps to be excellent. I'm often in pure amazement regarding their playlist. I have a little music server/streamer that I built using a Raspberry Pi / HiFiBerry DAC Pro+ that I use for streaming RP to my main system. It sounds great!
Happy Weekend to All, and Enjoy....... |
@slaw
I use my little Raspberry Pi music server to stream to my main system. I built a killer little streamer/server for under $200 and it could be done for about $100 if you forego a fancy power supply and case. Heck, if you have a USB DAC, you could build a Raspberry Pi dedicated music streamer/server for under $50 and get really decent sound. Also, the MoOde OS is free and super easy to set up and use. It's incredibly robust. I left it running for a week while I went on vacation. Came home and it was still streaming Radio Paradise via a wifi connection. |
Nazareth - "Close Enough for Rock 'n' Roll" on original 1975 vinyl.
|
Gerry Rafferty - City to City |
@astewart8944 - Yep, City to City is a gem. There are some really strong tracks on this album. Very good, all the way through IMHO.
|
@astewart8944 - I just picked up my copy of "City to City" at my local record store - Everybody's Records last weekend for $3.99 and its a really clean, solid NM with an NM cover. What a steal!
I've found some great stuff for great prices at Half Price Books. I just wish they were organized better. At my local store they do not separate new and used and they do not alphabetize them or categorize them. You have to look through the whole section every time. But it's still worth it to go there...... |
Richard Thompson - "Rumor and Sigh" in preparation for seeing him tomorrow night in concert.
|
Nils Lofgren - Acoustic Live
Pete Townshend - White City
|
Doing Alt-Country/Americana tonight
Ryan Bingham - "Mescalito"
Turnpike Troubadours - "Diamonds and Gasoline" |
@astewart8944 - Counting Crows - "August and Everything After" is an AWESOME album. Really strong lyrically and musically. Sonically, it's pretty good too. "Anna Begins" is probably my favorite cut from the album. Well, if I were forced to pick a favorite......... :~)
Thanks for the reminder. I've got the CD spinning as I write this.....
|
Dwight Twilley Band - "Twilley Don't Mind" |
Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - "Closer To It!" |
I guess it's Warren Zevon night..........
Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy
Warren Zevon - Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School
Warren Zevon - Stand in the Fire
All on Vinyl |
@astewart8944 - Yep, I'm a big fan of Warren Zevon (RIP). Finished off my WZ fix this evening with "The Wind". It's hard to listen to it without a heavy heart, knowing he knew he was dying when he recorded it. Give real meaning to songs such as "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Keep Me In Your Heart".
|
The Smithereens - Especially for You |
The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall |
David and David - Boomtown on vinyl
|
Robin Trower - "For Earth Below" on vinyl |
Elton John - "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" on Vinyl. |
@ghosthouse - So, I really like Captain Fantastic. It was from my High School Years and I have very fond memories of it from back in the day. Interestingly, I did not know the story behind it until recently. Check out the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Fantastic_and_the_Brown_Dirt_Cowboy It's way more pop'y than the first 3-4 albums. More in line with other mid-'70's albums immediately before and after it. There is the big hit - "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", which I personally always liked. But my favorite part of the record is the 3 closing tunes - "Writing, We All Fall In Love Sometime and Curtains". I love the transition between "We All Fall In Love Sometime and Curtains". I'm really happy that I found a really nice, near mint copy of the album, with lyric and photo books. And I got it for $5. SCORE! |
Ry Cooder - "Bop Till You Drop" on Vinyl |
The Alarm - "Declaration" on vinyl |
Son Volt - "Notes of Blue" on Vinyl |
Allan Holdsworth - Metal Fatigue
I was lucky to hear this playing in a record store in 1985 when it was released. Bought it on the spot and I've listened to it often since that time.
If you like Rock/Jazz Fusion or virtuoso guitarist, check it out. Fantastic album IMHO.
RIP Allan Holdsworth....... |
Steve Winwood - Back in the High Life |
|
Adrian Belew - Mr. Music Head on CD - Still fantastic nearly 30 years later.... |
Dwight Yoakam - If There Was a Way |
Silversun Pickups - Swoon |
Talking Heads - "Fear of Music" on the original first release vinyl......
|
@uberwaltz - I love "Spike". I’m a big Elvis Costello fan, and "Spike" is in my top 3-4 favorite EC albums. |
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I don't own "Blood and Chocolate" on vinyl or CD. I've only hear it a couple of times over the years, so I'm streaming it via Spotify right now. Obviously I'm not super familiar with it, so it's tough to rate it or put it in my hierarchy of EC albums. However, based on tonight's listen. it's not going to replace any of my top 3 favorite Elvis Costello albums. There are a couple of very good songs, like "I Want You" and "Battered Old Bird". But overall, for me it doesn't hold my interest, start to finish, like "All This Useless Beauty", "King of America" or "Spike". Maybe with a few more listens...........
It's been on a Amazon wishlist for 2-3 years..... |
@uberwaltz - True words
Enjoy! |
John Prine - "Fair and Square" |
@ghosthouse - Dada - Puzzle
One of my favorites! Saw the 20th anniversary tour a few years ago, and they were awesome!
|
@uberwaltz - "Bloodletting" - Great record. |
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - "God Fodder" |
Lots of Steely Dan. RIP Walter......
|
Sweet Relief - A Benefit for Victoria Williams (1993)
I'm not typically a fan of this type of compilation, i.e. a particular artist/songwriter's works covered by a diverse group of popular artists. However, this one is awesome! Here's a list of the artists who cover Victoria Williams songs on this album:
Soul Asylum Lucinda Williams Pearl Jam Buffalo Tom Michael Penn Shudder to Think Lou Reed Maria McKee Matthew Sweet Evan Dando of Lemonheads The Jayhawks The Waterboys Giant Sand Michelle Shocked
Really great collection of great songs and some outstanding performances. |
