I remember you jumped in with both feet. Glad you like them all, I was a bit worried. I probably will end up with others,
however, I encourage you to make a Rising Appalachia station on Pandora. I am going to try some of the other 'like RA' that randomly pop up that I never would learn about except via Pandora. |

I'm glad you are pleased, Joni is terrific.
USPO has been very late, I shipped one on Dec. 3rd. still not delivered. Not my fault, but I decided to give the buyer a surprise full refund, if it shows up, they are welcome to it.

I'm happy a few of you were inspired to give a test listen to some of my bday prizes.
my sump pump failed, so I haven't had time to enjoy my new music,
I played 1st side of Rising Appalachia, oh baby, superb, I am glad a few of you 'found' them here. Donna found them from a email feed from a concert hall they were going to perform at (now shuttered). I had forgotten Ani DiFranco sings with them on 1 song, I recognized her voice, that was a treat.
Some day, we will see/hear them live!
New Sump pumps here in 1 hour, then evening plans, some listening planned for tomorrow! |
Goanna, Spirit of Place, Australian Band
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_of_Place_(album)
Live Aid started in the middle of the night here, in Australia. I recorded it, heard INXS first time, had no idea how to pronounce it. Heard a few bands, liked Goanna, not sure where I bought it, but I got it. I'm gonna have to drag those videos out, see if the VCR is working, it's hooked up! |

Sade, Best Of, 2 lp set.
I realized, I have lots of Sade CD's and 2 DVD Sade Concerts, but no Vinyl, so I asked my son for it for Father's Day. Wonderful. |
I found a batch of early Jazz 45's. I used my newly acquired method of cleaning them, and several sound terrific (via my Mono cartridge), some are simply beat, the covers are cool. |

Hey! Coincidentally, I just listened to Quah a few days ago. LP is soooooo much better than the CD. |
Mono LP's, Jazz, on my new Grado ME+ Mono cartridge ($150.) I followed a thread here about mono that led me to this decision, I am VERY GLAD I got this. Last night I played a collection of Jazz tunes, Chicago South Side Jazz, from 1927-1930.
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Chicago-South-Side-Jazz-Vol-1/release/5104002
Stereo cartridge, preamp in Mono, listening was more like a history lesson. One prominent instrument, everything else low volume, seemed a half mile away. Very early Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines. I strained to hear them with Stereo Cartridge, Repeated with Mono Cartridge, bingo, I became INVOLVED with the music, a huge difference! There, a band all together, there's Louis, there's Earl. |

last night a wonderful curiosity, Little Esther Phillips, this one I found in great shape a while ago:
https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/4316781?ev=rb
I just finished my two arm deck, rear arm Mono cartridge, side arm Stereo. LP jacket said 'Monophonic'. Played Mono. Seemed a few sounds were still separate l/r, her voice didn't sound too good. Ah, label on disc say's Stereo. I play it, expecting horrible re-processed Stereo, it was not 'right', but quite enjoyable, her voice very good, and I don't know how they separated a few instruments to get some left and some right, but they did. I checked it out, seems original Mono was issued in 1959. This was a re-issue, Stereo, inserted in the original jacket (old stock?) that had Monophonic printed on it. Another curiosity: Production of Stereo LP began 1958. Prior to that, and in the transition years, big labels had two teams, were recording separate 2 track and 1 track masters. Rudy Van Gelder, a small producer, the actual recording engineer, decided to record 2 track, produce Mono mix from that, and have the 2 track master for the future. So, did King records record Esther 2 track in 1959, and issue Mono, and use a 2 track master for the 1987 re-issue, or, a synthetic creation from a mono master? |

noromance3,932 posts07-26-2020 2:23pm@elliottnewcombjr You sure the Earl Hines is 1954 mono? The link is to an 1981 RE. ..................................... Mine is the 1981 reissue of the album, originally recorded in 1954 Mono. It does not say mono or stereo anywhere on the Jacket or LP label. Played with my Grado Mono cartridge, sounds terrific. ........................................... Yesterday I found and cleaned two Louis Armstrong in my collection. (many given to me or bought in thrift stores, many I never played before ). One, ’Rare Items 1935-1944’, says ’enhanced for stereo’, then, it says in small print that Decca Stereo LP’s can be played on ’Today’s Monaural’ phonographs. I’ll play it today both ways, fearing enhancement of course.
https://www.discogs.com/Louis-Armstrong-And-His-Orchestra-Louis-Armstrong-Rare-Items-1935-1944/release/10514892
Other one, Vol IV, Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, big print: ’Digitally Remastered Directly from the Original Analog Tapes’ (1989 promotion copy), 1 track from 1927, 17 tracks from 1928.
https://www.discogs.com/Louis-Armstrong-Volume-IV-Louis-Armstrong-And-Earl-Hines/release/1364133
no mention, mono or stereo on jacket or lp label. small print: "every effort ... to preserve the integrity of the pre-stereo analog recordings". then, 2 curious things: 1. these transfers from metal or shellac parts contain imperfections ... 2. original 78’s from the collection of ... so, how from analog tapes??? I’ll listen tonight |

Patty Griffin, Oh Yeah!
Mingus Dynasty, Live at Montreux. Terrific Live Imaging. Mingus Dynasty is a rotating group of primarily Mingus Alumni. These are all Mingus Compositions, and, they have two bass players, one far left, one far right. (here’s stereo bass for you) Live recordings can be the best imaging, sometimes loud crowd noise ’ruins it’, here is non-disturbing, not loud crowd noise only at end of tracks. https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/1448034?sort=condition%2Cdesc&ev=rb

my initial reaction, but it’s just curiosity, it’s easy enough to put the answer, perhaps people have enough interest to purchase, I would want to know, poster says that version sounds great, avoid re-processed ...
it’s very easy to post the link from Discog, lots of info, available elsewhere of course.

tomic601 now I see it was a more of a way to get to the wine joke. good one. I took it more seriously because I think everyone should own the ones I list. they sound so good, I want everyone I imagine out there to have one. i.e. listened to Bad Company last night, I enjoyed it, decent recording, always love Paul Rodgers’ voice, but nothing superior about it, no reason to own an LP version of it while the ones I list are well worth having the LP version if it’s the reader’s type of enjoyment. IOW, making space in collection, I’ll sell or give away Bad Company LP (keep the CD or stream favorite tracks), never part with Lee Konitz/Red Mitchell LP, enjoy every track.. |
Has anyone been inspired to buy something mentioned here? |
Grumiaux is my favorite Violinist, I'm looking for my LP of him playing Paganini, it's here somewhere.
I had no idea how world famous he was, just took a lucky chance in a bargain bin.
I have both Haifetz and Oistrakh out to be cleaned in the next batch. |

People always ask, "What do you want for your birthday?" A few years ago I started being ready, emailing links to LP’s I want. I turned 72 on the 12th, mother, brothers, son, wife ... nearly everything has arrived, I asked for and will be listening to: Kate Wolf, Lines on the Paper, never heard it, but love anything she writes/performs https://www.etsy.com/listing/751119610/kate-wolf-the-wildwood-flower-lines-on?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_c-books_movies_and_music-music-recorded_audio&utm_custom1=0c2a091c-1de8-481a-a082-86582ebe41b5&utm_content=go_1843970635_75209201732_346429112063_pla-354802992938_c__751119610&utm_custom2=1843970635&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7Nj5BRCZARIsABwxDKIyWGxARPFdC583mt5P2wI5Rx-aNwyOGXeUX1rHJepxgefNGBEaDnsaAjXnEALw_wcB Cassandra Wilson, Blue Light Til Dawn, my favorite of hers, https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B005ME7FMA?tag=amz-mkt-chr-us-20&ascsubtag=1ba00-01000-org00-win10-other-smile-us000-pcomp-feature-scomp-wm-5&ref=aa_scomp_sosp1 Jose Feliciano, Live at the London Palladium https://www.amazon.com/Jos%C3%A9-Feliciano-Alive-London-Palladium/dp/B00L81C94A Norah Jones, Day Breaks https://www.amazon.com/Day-Breaks-Deluxe-Uhqcd-Remaster/dp/B075LSQG9N/ref=asc_df_B075LSQG9N/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312026032317&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7788367142139962594&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003512&hvtargid=pla-524304072462&psc=1 Rising Appalachia, Leylines (one of my favorite Pandora stations) https://stores.portmerch.com/risingappalachia/featured-products/leylines-lp.html and I was given some flea market finds, some 45’s and lps And, this Timely Find Lyndon Johnson’s Civil Rights Speech, March 15, 1965 (55 years ago, I was 17 then) https://www.etsy.com/listing/771481830/lyndon-b-johnson-we-shall-overcome-12?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-books_movies_and_music-music-recorded_audio&utm_custom1=0c2a091c-1de8-481a-a082-86582ebe41b5&utm_content=go_2063077145_76452859415_367965824076_pla-354802992938_c__771481830&utm_custom2=2063077145&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7Nj5BRCZARIsABwxDKLOglSwVYN70_qxfvpkSKzLZyQaUR4kgrKdNW-yYQ1XwYdZkwt48BMaAi1CEALw_wcB I have Nixon’s Resignation Speech on Reel to Reel, to be played at my funeral, one of the happiest moments of my life. Found time to listen to Norah Jones, Day Breaks, double LP https://www.discogs.com/Norah-Jones-Day-Breaks/release/11061238 1st disc, Studio; 2nd LP live small Loretto theater NYC, 4 years ago. (I’ve never been there, but looks like a terrific size. I’d try balcony, front and center https://www.sheencenter.org/venues/ like the similarly sized Victoria Theater at NJPAC., grear sound and sight for photographs. https://www.njpac.org/visit/our-spaces/ As they said, return to her roots, piano based low key jazz, her beautiful voice and unique touch on the keys. I definitely preferred the Live disc, very respectful crowd, but, I realized, it was too bunched up, I widened my toe-in, that gave a very nice distinction of separate instruments and their locations, like a small stage. I’m going to go back to the 1st studio LP, see how things change with wider toe-in. Previously, a different LP, I needed to adjust them ’in’ for a recording that was un-naturally wide. Speakers on wheels to the rescue, combined with remote balance, can make big differences. I often adjust my single listening default toe-in for a wider center when I have a friend over for a listening session, if 3 people, I sit just behind them, centered. I’m gonna play with toe-in when the center is correct, but all bunched up. You gotta avoid creating the world’s widest piano, that sucks. |

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound"...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen!" Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011
One of the first Broadway musical scores to be overtly jazz-influenced was Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, a tale of rival street gangs in the inner city. In 1962, pianist Oscar Peterson put his light-swing signature on the already popular score, making it, in the words of one critic, "a delight to hear again" and earning him a Grammy nomination. Originally released in 1962

I received and played the Melissa Etheridge. DMM version just happened to be at a good price. https://www.discogs.com/Melissa-Etheridge-Melissa-Etheridge/master/110400Warm up your tubes first, then have at it, it is terrific. Of course my system is far better than 31 years ago when the album was new, This is a very good condition very noise free copy. Her voice and songs are amazing, and now you hear all the great musicians like never before. I played it loud the first day, got the blood moving, the memories flowing. Today normal decent volume and lower volume just to hear it that way, couldn't be happier.
Well recorded, clear tight imaging, like a small stage band, not spread out on a large stage. Individual instrument distinction easily perceived in no exaggerated way. IOW, you easily listen to the music, not straining to listen to your system. This one, and my CD version will be good for my comparison of my new Oppo BDP-105 to prior CD player and the CD to the LP.
I wish it existed on Reel to Reel.

there is some pretty high guitar playing on Melissa, I noticed the same thing on a Pretenders LP, I went back and forth, concluded that is what/how they played.
1st impression can be ’too bright’, ’not enough bass’ but play your Cd version, I think we didn’t notice the highs as much because our equipment ’back then’ wasn’t as revealing.
there’s some pretty nice bass on some tracks. If so, when so, that means the other tracks didn't have much bass, it's not the pressing IMO. |

Ani DiFranco, latest https://www.righteousbabe.com/collections/ani-difranco/products/ani-difranco-revolutionary-love-albu...Not for me, played once, I’m gonna sell it. btw, 2 lps, music on only 3 sides, dumb raised ’graphic’ on 4th disc. thinking about it, they could have issued the same amount of music at 45 rpm, over 4 sides, no extra cost; or, leave 1 side smooth, use for anti-skate; or, make a universal protractor/alignment grid, just nobody was thinking except some dumb marketing image. they could have filled the 4th side with prior protest songs, like ’to the teeth’, if you haven’t heard it, there are other versions, this one is live from France, 2007, didn’t view/listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNA4mQuKIMw |
