Kirill Kondrashin conducting Dvorák Symphony 9, The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Decca

@drrsutliff Yes, Szell and Wagner is always good. Fits his style of conducting well. A very ‘big’ powerful combo.
@slaw

I will be very interested in how the mono cart performs. I would think It has to be better than the external switch box I was considering.

The Soundsmith is out for delivery, and I have so much work to do today. But, It will be hard not to mount it as soon as it arrives ;-)

I have an Ortofon Cadenza mono..... last time I mounted it, I got a little distortion. Realized later I didn’t take into account the slight/off STP distance my VPI still has. Need to re-try.
Been spinning CD’s most the night, but needed a vinyl fix....

Karajan conducting Beethoven’s 5th, and Schubert’s 8th, “unfinished”. Berlin Philharmonic. Deutsche Grammophon, of course.
Szell conducts Brahms - Double Concerto in A minor. The Cleveland Orchestra with David Oistrach and Mstislav Rostropovich. Angel reissue 1980’s, original 1970.
@tomic601

Brian inspired me...

Richard and Linda Thompson - Pour  Down Like Silver

👍🏼 Both those albums are really wonderful.

Yevgeny Mravinsky conducting Tchaikovsky’s 4th and 5th. Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Deutsche Grammophon.

@slaw

I don’t have a lot of Mayall but A Hard Road is so far, my favorite.

Do you have Jazz Blues Fusion Steve?

The Beatles - Let it Be. Apple 1970

The last released, but not the last recorded.
Karajan conducts Beethoven, Symphonies 5, 6, & 7. Berlin Philharmonic. 1975 German box cycle re-release from 1962. Deutsche Grammophon.

May listen to 8 & 9 before the night is over as these cycle is so damn good.
Sounds great Steve, congrats. I know, eventually, I’ll need to send my SOTA in to get a tune-up and newer motor installed. I check my speed every other day or so. Not a huge deal, but would be great if it was more consistent. With your set-up, as I understand, it does the work for you. And, it has improved the sound of your VPI. win win 👍🏼

The Cleveland Quartet : Barber - String Quartet, Op. 11 & Ives - String Quartet No. 2 / Scherzo For String Quartet. RCA Red Seal 1976

@uberwaltz

One reason I chose the Ortofon Mono Cart over a Grado offering.

Exactly why I chose the Orotfon Mono cart over the Grado as well.

Was streaming the Berlin Philharmonic live. Mehta conducting Mahler’s No. 3. Incredible.

Now back to vinyl. This just arrived today, recommended by some friends I truly trust.

Ry Cooder/John Hiatt/Jim Keltner/Nick Lowe - Little Village. Reprise reissue 2019, originally 1992

Neil Young - Harvest. Reprise 1972

Masterpiece. No matter how many hundreds of times I’ve listened to it, it never becomes tired.
Bernstein conducts Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano #2 & Bach’s Concerto for Piano #1. Glenn Gould w/Columbia Symphony Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1957 Mono
@uberwaltz

Now you can see how good mono can sound.

I’m quite pleased. And glad I went this route instead of adding an external switch.
I never had a huge problem with playing mono LP’s with a stereo cart, but knew I was missing a lot from studying about it. After getting the dedicated cart, the difference is striking, really.
Eugene Ormandy conducts Beethoven’s Piano Concerto’s #2 (again) and #4. The Philadelphia Orchestra w/Rudolf Serkin.  Columbia Masterworks 1955 Mono
Maazel conducts Bizet - L’Arlesienne Suites & Jeux D’Enfants. The Cleveland Orchestra. London 1980
A couple of my 11 new Discogs purchases:

American String Quartet, Dvorak String Quartets 9&10. Nonesuch 1986

Szell conducts Schubert #9 ‘Great’. Cleveland Orchestra. CBS Great Performances. Re-release/master 1981

Szell conducts Strauss, Symphonia Domestica. Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks. 1964
All Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra from my latest Discogs purchase (what can I say, a proud ‘homer’):

Incidental Music; Shubert - Rosamunde & Mendelssohn - A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Columbia re-release/master. 1973

Brahms, Piano Concerto #2 Leon Fleisher. Epic. Date unknown, originally released in 1962. Mono.

Brahms Double Concerto in A minor. Oistrakh & Rostropovich. Angel. Re-release. Recorded in 1969. Excellent. Really good Recording for an Angel release, which can be inconsistent. Their first Recording of the Cleveland Orchestra.
One more...

Karajan conducts Sebelius : Findlandia, Valse Triste, Der Schwan Von Tuonela, Tapiola. Berlin Philharmoniker. Deutsch Grammophon, German pressing. 1967.

Outstanding recording.
@tomic601 Ah yes, the Christoph von Dohnányi years. Cleveland has had some very good conductors following Szell.

But, one of the biggest thrills is simply sitting in Severance Hall. Incredible place. It was Szell who made some big improvements to the hall, and hasn’t changed much since.

I’ve got to get tickets for a couple of concerts when it gets open post virus. I have yet to see Franz Welser-Möst conduct, as he became the conductor right after I got divorced, and have never attended alone. But, the hell with that, nothing beats seeing a live orchestra in a hall like Severance.
A Schumann Song Recital - Dietrich Fisher-Diekau baratone & Gunther Weissenborn piano. DECCA gold label series, probably late 50’s. Mono

This album is incredible for its sound quality, and quiet as hell. In near perfect condition. Pretty stunning.
Andre Previn conducts Rachmaninoff concertos #1 & 4. Leonard Pennario and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. RCA VIctor Red Seal. 1965

Mehta conducts Bruch violin concerto #1 & Lalo Symphony Espagnole. Los Angeles Symphony w/Pinchas Zukerman. CBS Masterworks. 1979

Horowitz plays Schumann’s Variations on a Theme by Clara Wieck & Kreisleriana. Columbia Masterworks. 1970
@mammothguy54

Ha! You have quite a collection as well. Definitely take Jim up on his offer, a true gentleman.

I don’t usually mix genre’s during a listening session/period, but, itching to listen to different types of stuff.

Szell conducts Sibelius - Symphony No. 2. Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Philips 1965, Netherlands

Just arrived:

Tom Petty - Wildflowers & All The Rest. WB 3LP gatefold. 2020

Wow, sounds incredible. Highly recommended
@slaw

Thanks for the heads-up on Live At Canterbury House Steve. Seems you can pick it up new for about $50. Not bad.

I’m still waiting on Clouds and Seagul to arrive in the next couple days, then need to find Blue. Can’t believe I never bought any of these albums over the years.....but am now.

@big_greg

Thanks Greg. Yea, I am fascinating by myself thinking I need more than one amp 😁  I was always more an integrated type of guy, maybe a tuner added to it back in the day. Now, I have a separate pre, phono pre, DAC, and of course, two separate amps. lol. No tuner, but I do believe my old one is around here somewhere.

Paul Kletzki conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler Symphony #1. Angel Records. Really nice version.
Was going to take a night off, but for whatever reason, this album, which I have not played in ages, kept entering my mind, daring to put it on the TT. So, I relented, and did...

Mink DeVille - Return to Magenta. Capital 1978

Glad I did. ‘Willy DeVille’ was quite the character, now gone. I’d never heard this album on a system like I have currently, and I must say, my old system back then could not have done it justice.
Digging into my old albums from the 70’s

Grateful Dead Europe 72, original release
Absolutely. Probably can blame Jerry Garcia for my interest in bluegrass

@bkeske I've a few Flatt & Scruggs albums. Great musicians.
