Well Mitch its not morning somewhere... ————————————- UFO No Heavy Petting Chrysalis 1976 OP speaking of wicked guitar tone.... ————————————- @slaw i have two of Aofie’s studio records. Think that’s all there are on full LP. I have lots of other wonderful things she’s done like with Noam (seeing him herr in PDX tuesday!) sarah and sarah and Chris Thile and Goat Rodeo and of course the old Crooked Still stuff which I just love and some others. I got to hang out with her a bit a fee years ago after a very small show at Sweetwater in Marin. She is really cool. Kind of modest and maybe even a little shy. It was a funny thing that week: Just the night before the Deadly Gentlemen and a couple other of the crooked still alums (the crazy cello player and the violin player Brittany Haas (sp?) were playing freight and salvage in Berkeley. So, there was a lot of talk about a CS reunion in California but it didn't happen. I think she is one of those truly unique and beautiful singers who’ve made and chosen really good music. I really appreciate her. |
@tomic601 i ordered a purple Levi Parham “its all good”. Great record. Thanks for the heads up about it. on a (sort of) related note, have you ever watched this documentary about the Muscle Shoals studio? https://m.imdb.com/title/tt2492916/ I loved it. Even bought the soundtrack. The promotion for “its all good” doesn’t have the studio history quite right but i think their hearts was in the right place. Album sounds really good, esp. the guitar work. And man he’s got a great voice. Not news to you of course. |
@tomic601 @slaw I’ve streamed the Highwomen three times now. Haven’t bought it. To me its more interesting than beautiful. Sure is popular. Sometimes i think the things that make music popular are the things that don’t appeal to me. Ive found this to be true with books even more so. Btw, this Mindy Smith is meltin my heart. Really sweet. |
Yes @wayneschlapkohl my observation was (mostly) about sq. I’m not qualified to judge really but I believe our Oregon Symphony comprises great musicians and leadership. Seems like they play very well. I’m just almost always disappointed with the sound in their principal venue. The sound coming out of my stereo (even when I’m sitting in the adjacent dining room….) from my turntable is cleaner, clearer, more dynamic (most surprisingly) and more balanced with more distinction between instruments…. I could go on and on. I don’t know about comparing different performances of the same music or the fundamental talents of different orchestras. The berlin philharmonic seems the most brilliant on the beethoven to me but what do I know. I’m just an old jazz trombone player….. _________________________________ Caroline Spence - “Mint Condition” _________________________________ Re more popular and contemporary stuff seen live. I go through phases but still see a lot of live music for an old guy. I’m often one of the handful of older persons, if not the oldest person, in the crowd. I have to overcome my loathing for discourteous crowds but I keep going for the reasons you mention with most articulate description, yes, and maybe also to watch fingers. Saw Son Volt last week and they began their set, as I’ve seen Jay do several times now, with all the songs from his latest record (Union: https://www.discogs.com/Son-Volt-Union/release/13436312) and it’s of course sloppier and noisier than on the record but it’s live baby! It’s real. No substitute. So, Caroline Spence is coming to my town on a Tuesday night next January on a double bill with some guy I don’t care much about but just bought my ticket. I must go see her perform in person to discover what the real deal is with this huge infatuation I have for her from just listening to her magical voice. She’s got kinda sneaky good talent. Control but not too contrived or dramatic or anything. Depth of genuine character. Just enough country - comes across as authentic. I have nothing but the best plans for our future life together…... |
Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C Minor Op. 67 Berliner Philharmoniker Simon Rattle Limited Edition 2017 This is a truly exceptional recording. I think it was Herb Rickert (sp?) that asserted it to be perhaps the finest recording (of anything) ever made. Single mike (array?) high above the conductor in their own hall. A true wonder. This morning The 5th was quite a bit better at home on the system really than last night at the hall. We attended our Oregon Symphony’s performance (they were recording for a later CD release) at the Snitzer Concert Hall downtown. The space is problematic. Brass far too loud, violas on the left slanted to the back (naturally) undetectable, and an overall smear and pretty much no discernible soundstage (in a concert hall!). Its all a muddle with a huge alcove (for the choir) behind the stage where all harmonics go to die. Its a shame really. Years ago, before remodeling, when it was called the Paramount, we would go there to see Kiss, Alice Cooper, Rush, et.al. It was a cratering dump and it was great. Now i just long for the days when our symphony performed at our civic auditorium where the acoustics are still excellent. We caught the Oregon Ballet Theatre there the other night and the orchestra sounded wonderful. I suppose I’ve been spoiled by my stereo.... |
Thanks @tomic601 Ruth would be a perfect candidate for vinyl me please or one of those outfits. Maybe someday soon.... ——————————- Blue Rose Code The Ballads of Peckham Rye Ronachan Songs 2014 ...And Lo! The Bird is on the Wing Ronachan Songs 2016 Beautiful and interesting and quite moving music. Ross signed these record covers for me. Very dear to me these. Still a bit of an obscure Scot toiling away in London but If you haven’t heard of Blue Rose Code recommend checking it out. If your spouse likes music like Van Morrison or early Iron & Wine or maybe Nick Drake then this fellow will please. Really nice voice. Enough salesmanship - stop! |
Yep. Listened to her on my headphone rig this morning and was one again moved by the sweetness of her voice. I got to like this style of music over the last decade or so with the rise of punch brothers and crooked still and others of course. Was telling my cousin about her so had to play it again for him while we were hanging out before the hockey game. Then at the game was telling my Daughter (who’s seen the Wailing Jennys ) about her solo stuff and so we just had to put it on again. So very sweet. |
@tomic601 “thanks all for record rack inputs, we decided to go w Prather 2 bin model in Cherry with galvanized rod. Holds about 300 so should hold me for another year, or so......“ i thought the name of that rack sounded sort of familiar (i cant remember names very well anymore). We have his small model (holds 40-50) in all cherry out in the living room for handy access to recent arrivals. I love the purpose oriented design and the unpretentious beauty of it. Tasteful choice sir. |
The Pineapple Thief Dissolution Kscope 2018 this is progressive heavy rock but with good vocals (no cookie monster), one of the world’s best drummers, great musicianship, great songs and fantastic sonic production. Hard rock with air between the instruments. Incredible to me. Cross Plini with UFO and with Queen in as guests....maybe .... |
