Mtume pulls the upset and takes SQ crown. Only Julie London was hampered by SQ. The MCA "Dan" was good but nothing special. Green Light had a "Stones" type vibe to it with excellent content and near Audiophile SQ. If you have any interest in Jazz/Fusion Rendezvous should be in your collection.
|
@big_greg +1 "Across A Crowed Room" might not be a 5* recording but hard to pick the best song off a very solid album. Already had "Shoot Out The Lights"(in 1984) on vinyl which was a little complex for a teenager but was able to discern something special within that album. Will play "Room" or "Lights" on next vinyl night.
|
@bdp24 When Marshall Crenshaw released his debut album I was only 17. Was not allowed to attend a rock concert until I was 19, my parents were very strict. Became more aware of his talents when I discovered Joni Mitchell/Van Morrison and Gordon Lightfoot several years later.
|
@nicks25 Marshall Crenshaw/ST a top 25 pop/rock recording from the 1980’s. You are crushin' it today.
|
@nicks25 No, I have not but will look into it. IMO ZZ Top have 4 5* recordings... Tres Hombre/Fandango/Deguello and Eliminator.
|
@nicks25 +3 "Tres Hombres" might be to "mainstream" for some clowns on Agon(lol)? Clearly a top 50 pop/rock recording of the 1970’s.

SQ-Nothing of poor quality was Procol/flat/weak bass or Thunderbirds/edgy slight harshness worse? Pick your poison. Supertramp easily takes the SQ crown with great bass/treble extension. Is it a demo level disc? Despite the critics "Absolutely Live" is a very worthy recording. "Big City" is yet another great CJ release.

Very good overall SQ tonight only "Humble Pie" hit the average mark. Lamb/McLean were very close to Audiophile SQ status. Phil Woods takes the SQ crown(direct to disc) a demo quality recording. CJP-200 one of the best regarding SQ/Content of the entire Concord Jazz vinyl catalog CJ 1 - CJ 400

Another Concord Jazz takes the SQ Crown! Nothing had below standard SQ tonight. SQ* London Grammar(2014) Had a static hiss on side C so I spun side B which had very good SQ for a newer release but rated last in SQ tonight. Unless a new recording is on an Ultra Hi/End label its best avoided or buy the CD version. Very few play Streisand here? Lazy Afternoon is clearly her best 1970's album when regarding content and SQ. 2112 original press(1976) is much better than the original CD. Was I a little lenient giving it Audiophile SQ status maybe?

Yes, it was 80's night. Ignore the masses "Do It Again" is the equal of Ronstadt's 3 Nelson Riddle recordings. Had to play 2 80's guitar gods Vai/Moore! The Japanese pressing was fair with SQ. Rapture is a great recording that defies genre. I wish Ms. Baker would have added 1 jazz(vocal) standard on the recording. SQ* just missed Audiophile SQ status otherwise a great sophisticated pop recording.

With the Serendipity Singers I’m digging into about 40 M- 1960’s thrift store finds that will be played before years end. Plenty of Tijuana Brass/New Christy Minstrels to look forward to(lol) SQ* George Horn and Bernie Grundman rarely miss. Gallagher easily a Top 5 "Guitar God" of the 1970’s deserves more attention. Something Real(1989) is one of the most overlooked recordings of the 1980’s, played the entire album. My SQ champ is Tenor Gladness even with a slightly aggressive/forward edge.

Power quality was not at its best all recordings have sounded better in previous playbacks. Several days of storms and minor flooding in the area might have an effect on power quality. Very close between Blast! and Soft Shoes with better power and longer power amp warm up I could pick a winner but tonight a tie. Neither recording is close to demo disc status just a solid 4.5/5

With 4 SQ* near Audiophile status and 4 Audiophile recordings this might be the strongest SQ set list in a long time! No need to talk about content all recordings are 4.5- 5* status. A close call between Burrell/Mozart-Perahia but I will give the SQ crown to Kenny Burrell for such an excellent live recording!
|
@reubent +1 Ramsey Lewis. What makes his music interesting is the difficulty in categorizing it into a specific genre. I hear Ray Charles/Herbie Hancock and a little Stevie Wonder in his later recordings. Sun Goddess(1974) might be a great starting point for this overlooked artist.

Moving on from Valerie Joyce(CD) I kept the cool jazz theme. With 6/8 Audiophile SQ recordings provided a great evening of SQ and content! SQ* Connor/Jarreau were a notch below the others in SQ. Difficult picking an SQ winner tonight but Maynard takes the SQ Crown due to the recording being dynamic and relaxed simultaneously. Portuguese Love is one of the standout tracks on this overlooked recording.

Tonight everything sounded above average, tough to pick a bottom feeder. Another Concord Jazz SQ winner. Richie Cole/Kamuca both overlooked with mainstream jazz followers. Southern Winds might be Ms. Muldaur's best/content recording. Bloodshot a colored vinyl pressing with very good SQ from 1973 exacerbates my disappointment with the current SQ issues of new vinyl.

Bette St. Claire-Basin Street East(1987 repress) Side 1 + 2
No recording made Audiophile SQ status which has happened a few times. On the positive side nothing sounded poor enough to impair the music. Sonny Criss just missed Audiophile SQ due to being to forward and aggressive but does take the SQ crown. Main Course was a close 2nd in SQ very good bass/drive but felt moderately closed in (my system)? Anyone interested in 1980’s slick hard rock/pop(Bon Jovi/Europe/Night Ranger) should enjoy Silk + Steel.

My wife wanted to hear Sgt. Pep. in entirety. Was disappointed in the SQ of Toto(77-90) since it was a 1991 release little effort was given on the vinyl side. Street Beat was the SQ champ with top level content. If you enjoy fusion jazz this is a must have.

@bslon +1 Hall & Oates-Abandoned Luncheonette 5* recording.

With only 1 Audiophile SQ level recording tells us were all prisoners to the recording and the power supplied to us. Maybe a Stromtank is something more of us should consider? With exception of Ten Years After(lack of treble) every recording was solid. Silver & Gold could be his last great recording(2000). Alicia De Larrocha stunning performance!

Correction. Bette St. Claire-At Basin Street East was released in 1960 on Seeco CELP 4560(stereo) CELP 456(mono). The 1987 repress(Spain) played last night on Fresh Sound Records FSR 553. Just want to get the facts straight unlike Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab!

Reality strikes with only 2/8 Audiophile SQ recordings tonight. Nash/Crosby great live recording with Audiophile SQ that is almost forgotten. I purchased it on a hunch after hearing a few Youtube vids. Really enjoyed Bette St. Claire like to find an original 1958 Stereo pressing. YES-Yes takes the SQ crown clearly a Top 50 pop/rock recording of the 1970’s.
|
@bslon +1
Appreciate your posts being concise and unpretentious. It appears you have a vast amount of 1970's OP classic rock recordings which is somewhat of a weak link in my collection. If possible, adding a SQ rating would be invaluable for me and many others.

With 5/8 Audiophile SQ recordings not much to complain about(lol). Tough to pick a SQ winner but a $10 OP album that has Audiophile SQ and top level content gets the crown(take that Mofi) Only Charlie Rich had so/so SQ which puts a damper on the great content. Ozone and Roberts recordings are worth investigating if your a serious Jazz fan. Would like to compare a mint/sealed OP Abraxas vs Mofi 1Step. My yard sale OP Abraxas(still had poster) might give the 1 Step a battle

Mofi has become the quasi-mainstream Audiophile label. With the increasing number of vinyl collectors whose priority is not SQ Mofi has adjusted with the current buyer

Finally spun some vinyl!! 4/8 Audiophile SQ recordings is an unattainable goal if you buy recordings you like no just based on SQ. Alice had the worst SQ. Sometimes the "Greatest Hits" versions are poorly done. I will give the SQ crown To Larry Vuckovich over Hamilton’s CJ release due to being less edgy(relaxed) in the treble.
|
@bkeske
Thx for the quick reply. Since the original CJ vinyl catalogue ended at CJ-400(George Shearing/Piano 1990) correct me if wrong. The Gene Harris Quartet "Listen Here!" could be one of the last 5 star recordings on original Concord Jazz vinyl.
|
@bkeske
+2 Both highly acclaimed Concord Jazz releases CJ-253 Monty Alexander and CJ-385 Gene Harris. Both are NOT in my 70+ CJ collection. Which recording has the better SQ?
