Larry Carlton-Friends Side 1 SQ Audiophile
Brahms-Stern/Mehta(M 35146) Side 1+2 SQ Audiophile
The Alan Parsons Project-I Robot Side 1 SQ Audiophile
4 recordings with Audiophile SQ and 2(SQ*) near misses makes for a very enjoyable night. Just a note, I rarely wax poetic over recording content because assume what I play I like. My focus on SQ could help if one is indecisive about a vinyl purchase. Parsons gets the SQ crown without any comments needed.

Oliva Newton-John-Greatest Hits Side 1
Dionne Warwick-Dionne Side 1
Michael Franks-One Bad Habit Side 2
Carpenters-Voice Of The Heart Side 2 SQ Audiophile
John Klemmer-Touch Side A SQ Audiophile
Every recording had above average SQ. After hearing Carpenters and Klemmer rise above the rest I could not justify giving any of the others Audiophile status. As many know "Touch" has a long history of being a demo disc which ultimately takes the SQ crown.

Aerosmith-Night In The Ruts Side 2 SQ*

Harold Betters-Funk City Express Side 2
Deep Purple-Perfect Strangers Side 2(B on label)
Tchaikovsky-Symphony No.4(RCA VICS-1000) Side 1+2
SQ* Just missed Audiophile SQ. If I had to pick a winner Uriah Heep gets the edge considering its a live album regardless of whether or not it was cleaned up in the studio. Gary Thain is wicked on bass as well as the entire band, great live album if your a classic rock fan! Perfect Strangers is one of the best rock albums of the 1980’s.
|
@tgilb +1 RLJ first 3 recordings are 5 star rated with demo level SQ. I do believe "The Magazine" was digitally recorded.
|
John Anderson-Wild And Blue Side 1
The Guess Who-Live At The Paramount Side 2
Sally Rogers And Howard Bursen-Satisfied Customers Side 1 SQ Audiophile
The Supremes Featuring Mary Wilson-Greatest Hits Side 1
The Scott Hamilton Quintet-The Right Time(CJ-311) Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Beethoven-Symphony No.4(London CS-6512) Side 1+2 SQ*
The Romantics-ST Side 1
Janis Siegel-At Home Side 2 SQ Audiophile
With the exception of the Supremes SQ flat/dull/muddy and Romantics bright/thin/edgy the rest had very good SQ. SQ* Beethoven just missed Audiophile SQ status due to dynamics being so/so. Guess Who live features an excellent expanded version of "American Woman" which should interest classic rock fans. Ms. Siegel takes the SQ crown over Scott Hamilton due to the soundstage being a little forward, not typical of Concord Jazz vinyl.

Shadowfax-The Dreams Of Children Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Jack Sheldon-The Warm World Of Jack Sheldon Side 1
Played 3 more M- thrift store finds Jones/Sheldon and the Osburne Brothers. All 3 will be added to my collection. Cougar disappointed me with SQ but has great content. Shadowfax was the runaway SQ champ which was mastered by Bernie Grundman.

Gary Moore-Victims Of The Future(Japanese Pressing) Side 1
Low Ride takes the SQ crown mastered by Bob Ludwig. The Canadian queen of the thrift store and dollar bins delivers with content and SQ on this album. If you have any interest in classical/baroque music consider Corelli "Christmas" Concerto for your X-mas play list.

Everything sounded above average tonight. The SQ crown goes to Tchaikovsky. Many of the original Stereo Six Eye recordings have a very wide soundstage. Glen Campbell released many subpar recordings but Houston is top level.

Ramsey Lewis-Wade In The Water Side 1
Played 4 more of my M- thrift store finds Peggy/Basie/Milt and Ramsey Lewis all were stereo versions with very solid sound. Basie was awarded Audiophile SQ due to very good dynamics. Enjoyed the "Glam Metal" of Kiss and Poison despite many well educated distractors. Another Concord Jazz takes the SQ crown and another recent recording Maggie Rogers(2019) takes last place.

Even with subpar quality power Ms. Ronstadt still delivered winning Audiophile SQ tonight. SQ* very close to Audiophile level. Played Alice’s Restauarant tonight due to it being an AOR radio Thanksgiving staple when I was a kid.

Jeff Lorber-In The Heat Of The Night Side 2 SQ*
Yes it was 80's night! I avoided some of the biggest sellers for a more unique playlist. Nothing made Audiophile SQ* status partially due to the Sunday evening power(quality) not being up to standard. Tough to pick a SQ winner but David & Shelly had an organic SQ edge. Shooting Star one of my favorite rock(non metal) albums of the 1980's.

The Nashville String Band-Identified! Side 2
EWF takes the SQ crown by a nose over Carl Nielsen. SQ* Shocked how good Uriah Heep sounded must be an early 1st pressing could have Audiophile SQ need another listen. Nashville/Clapton battle for last SQ place. Clapton was dark/muddy Nashville was edgy/thin.
|
@big_greg +1 Women And Children First is my second favorite VH recording only behind the great debut. "Romeo Delight" has always been my No.1 VH song with "In a Simple Rhyme" placing in my top 10. Since only a few of us are consistently spinning Hard Rock/Metal let's "Keep The Faith"!

Mundell Lowe-Presents Transit West Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Bonnie Raitt-Green Light Side 2
Sadao Watanabe-Rendezvous Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Mtume pulls the upset and takes SQ crown. Only Julie London was hampered by SQ. The MCA "Dan" was good but nothing special. Green Light had a "Stones" type vibe to it with excellent content and near Audiophile SQ. If you have any interest in Jazz/Fusion Rendezvous should be in your collection.
|
@big_greg +1 "Across A Crowed Room" might not be a 5* recording but hard to pick the best song off a very solid album. Already had "Shoot Out The Lights"(in 1984) on vinyl which was a little complex for a teenager but was able to discern something special within that album. Will play "Room" or "Lights" on next vinyl night.
|
@bdp24 When Marshall Crenshaw released his debut album I was only 17. Was not allowed to attend a rock concert until I was 19, my parents were very strict. Became more aware of his talents when I discovered Joni Mitchell/Van Morrison and Gordon Lightfoot several years later.
|
@nicks25 Marshall Crenshaw/ST a top 25 pop/rock recording from the 1980’s. You are crushin' it today.
|
@nicks25 No, I have not but will look into it. IMO ZZ Top have 4 5* recordings... Tres Hombre/Fandango/Deguello and Eliminator.
|
@nicks25 +3 "Tres Hombres" might be to "mainstream" for some clowns on Agon(lol)? Clearly a top 50 pop/rock recording of the 1970’s.

Ernestine Anderson-Big City(CJ 214) Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Procol Harum-A Whiter Shade Of Pale(1973 repress) Side 1
SQ-Nothing of poor quality was Procol/flat/weak bass or Thunderbirds/edgy slight harshness worse? Pick your poison. Supertramp easily takes the SQ crown with great bass/treble extension. Is it a demo level disc? Despite the critics "Absolutely Live" is a very worthy recording. "Big City" is yet another great CJ release.

Humble Pie-Rockin’ The Fillmore Side 1
Tania Maria-Come With Me(CJP-200) Side 1 SQ Audiophile
Don McLean-ST Side 1
Very good overall SQ tonight only "Humble Pie" hit the average mark. Lamb/McLean were very close to Audiophile SQ status. Phil Woods takes the SQ crown(direct to disc) a demo quality recording. CJP-200 one of the best regarding SQ/Content of the entire Concord Jazz vinyl catalog CJ 1 - CJ 400
|
Barbra Streisand-Lazy Afternoon Side 1
Humble Pie-The Best Side 1
Shelly Manne-Perk Up(CJ 21) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Schumann-Carnaval(LSC-2669 Red Seal) Side 1
London Grammar-If You Wait Side B SQ*
Rush-2112 Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Brenda Russell-ST Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Another Concord Jazz takes the SQ Crown! Nothing had below standard SQ tonight. SQ* London Grammar(2014) Had a static hiss on side C so I spun side B which had very good SQ for a newer release but rated last in SQ tonight. Unless a new recording is on an Ultra Hi/End label its best avoided or buy the CD version. Very few play Streisand here? Lazy Afternoon is clearly her best 1970's album when regarding content and SQ. 2112 original press(1976) is much better than the original CD. Was I a little lenient giving it Audiophile SQ status maybe?

The Jeff Beck Group-Rough And Ready Side 1 SQ*
Earl Klugh-Dream Come True Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Joe Cocker-ST Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Played an extra side tonight(9). Earl Klugh won the SQ crown. SQ* Jeff Beck had great treble and bass but the mids were recessed. Cocker(live) recording was aggressive in nature but fits the artist. Great version of St. James Infirmary Blues!

Toni Tennille-Do It Again Side 1 SQ Audiophile
David Lee Roth-Eat 'Em And Smile Side 2
Anita Baker-Rapture Side 2

Basia-Time And Tide Side 2 SQ*
The Fabulous Thunderbirds-Tuff Enough Side 1
Reba McEntire-Greatest Hits Side 1
Gary Moore-Victims Of The Future(Japanese pressing VIL-6083) Side 1
Yes, it was 80's night. Ignore the masses "Do It Again" is the equal of Ronstadt's 3 Nelson Riddle recordings. Had to play 2 80's guitar gods Vai/Moore! The Japanese pressing was fair with SQ. Rapture is a great recording that defies genre. I wish Ms. Baker would have added 1 jazz(vocal) standard on the recording. SQ* just missed Audiophile SQ status otherwise a great sophisticated pop recording.

Jennifer Holiday-Say You Love Me Side 2 SQ*
With the Serendipity Singers I’m digging into about 40 M- 1960’s thrift store finds that will be played before years end. Plenty of Tijuana Brass/New Christy Minstrels to look forward to(lol) SQ* George Horn and Bernie Grundman rarely miss. Gallagher easily a Top 5 "Guitar God" of the 1970’s deserves more attention. Something Real(1989) is one of the most overlooked recordings of the 1980’s, played the entire album. My SQ champ is Tenor Gladness even with a slightly aggressive/forward edge.

The Marshall Tucker Band-Carolina Dreams Side 1
The Brothers Johnson-Blast! Side 2 SQ Audiophile
The Rolling Stones-Some Girls Side 1
Power quality was not at its best all recordings have sounded better in previous playbacks. Several days of storms and minor flooding in the area might have an effect on power quality. Very close between Blast! and Soft Shoes with better power and longer power amp warm up I could pick a winner but tonight a tie. Neither recording is close to demo disc status just a solid 4.5/5

Lefty was the only recording with average SQ. SQ* Weisberg had slightly excessive treble energy. With 5/8 recording having Audiophile SQ made for a great night but Supertramp was the runaway SQ champ leaving Royal a distant 2nd.

Rival Sons-Head Down Side 1
Pat Metheny Group-Still Life(talking) Side 1 SQ Audiophile
Power was very clean tonight resulting in 4 Audiophile SQ recordings. Only Moorer and Rival Sons SQ got in the way(diminished) of the music. Close SQ call between Metheny/Peplowski but Metheny had less edge/sharpness and IMO a higher SQ upside.

Laura Branigan-Self Control Side 1 SQ*
Sade-Promise Side 1 SQ Audiophile
Kenny Burrell Quartet-Guiding Spirit Side 1 SQ Audiophile
Gary Morris-Stones Side 1 SQ*
With 4 SQ* near Audiophile status and 4 Audiophile recordings this might be the strongest SQ set list in a long time! No need to talk about content all recordings are 4.5- 5* status. A close call between Burrell/Mozart-Perahia but I will give the SQ crown to Kenny Burrell for such an excellent live recording!
|
@reubent +1 Ramsey Lewis. What makes his music interesting is the difficulty in categorizing it into a specific genre. I hear Ray Charles/Herbie Hancock and a little Stevie Wonder in his later recordings. Sun Goddess(1974) might be a great starting point for this overlooked artist.

Joyce Collins Quartet-Moment To Moment Side 1 SQ Audiophile
Al Jarreau-This Time Side 2 SQ*
Zoot Sims-And The Gershwin Brothers Side 2 SQ Audiophile
Moving on from Valerie Joyce(CD) I kept the cool jazz theme. With 6/8 Audiophile SQ recordings provided a great evening of SQ and content! SQ* Connor/Jarreau were a notch below the others in SQ. Difficult picking an SQ winner tonight but Maynard takes the SQ Crown due to the recording being dynamic and relaxed simultaneously. Portuguese Love is one of the standout tracks on this overlooked recording.

With only 1 Audiophile SQ recording is a disappointment. Midnight Mama has demo level SQ. "How Long Blues" makes a solid demo track.

A nice mix on the last day of June! All had above average SQ. Easily Nugent's 2nd best studio recording with solid SQ. Great comeback album for P/P&M "Forever Young" is 5* Baby's-ST debut is severely overlooked IMO. Close SQ battle between Ross/P/P&M but Concord Jazz takes another SQ crown!

As mentioned it was 1980’s night. Nothing had below average SQ tonight, Even Bruce had decent SQ. Jarreau/Call had near Audiophile SQ. Pure 80’s country does not get any better than Vern. Shock a must for Motels Fans. The SQ crown goes to SVR for stellar content and near demo level SQ.

Carnaval is a solid Audiophile(SQ) recording not demo disc level but few are. SQ* Yes was very close to Audiophile SQ, might have been into the music more then being analytical? Only Live Rust was compromised by the recording quality.
@bslon Thx for the kind words!

Everything sounded above average with Don Henley taking last place with a slight digital edge. 24 Carrots SQ is outstanding! SQ winner tonight, could be a demo disc need to spin again. TLC is one of Ms. Wilson's best. Words can't describe Poetry. Might be Stan's last great recording.
