Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO

+1 @slaw   "Hot August Night" has become one of my wife's favorite recordings. The sonic quality of the OP is reference level.

Don McLean-ST Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Europe-Out Of This World Side 1

Men At Work-Business As Usual Side 1

Elton John-Breaking Hearts Side 2

Angela Bofill-Too Tough Side 1

A very good SQ night! The six other recordings are near Audiophile status. Men at Work had a tight direct unforced(laid back) transparent sound. I thought it was a little to thin sounding and lacking presence/dynamics)to give it Audiophile status. My copy was VG. As many know S/C Greatest is well known for having Audiophile SQ which proved SQ champ tonight.

@artemus_5   +1 Ricky Skaggs-Live in London probably the best live country album of the 1980's. Some might not know Elvis Costello performs on 1 track. I don't have this on vinyl only CD. Has a very clean relaxed "digital sound" generated by the JVC 3M system. Would you consider the vinyl having Audiophile SQ?

+1  @noromance   Nice to see Santana's "other" recordings being played.

+1  @mammothguy54   Have a VG+ "Business As Usual" believe its an OP.  Memory says it has near Audiophile SQ will play on Friday.

Roger McGuinn-Peace On You Side 1

The Staples-Pass It On Side 2

Climax Blues Band-Real To Reel Side 1

Karrin Allyson-Footprints(#1073) Side C SQ Audiophile

My playlist is from last night. Started a little late so only spun 6 albums. Karrin Allyson-Footprints was excellent in SQ and content. One of a few albums that I have paid at least $100 for. Yet another Concord Jazz recording with Audiophile SQ. "Peace On You" was better then expected, sure made it obvious where Tom Petty was influenced.

+1 @slaw   Picked up Dave Mason "Alone Together Again" about 3-4 years ago at a garage sale not knowing the album but having respect for Dave Mason as a musician. This recording gets better after every listen. Might be a Top 100 1970's pop/rock recording regardless of the "experts" opinion.

+1 @big_greg   Thx for the info. I have 2 VG garage sale finds that might be original pressings. Several months ago played the album that appeared in better condition the SQ was flat/muddy and anemic. Will find and clean the other and hope for better SQ.

Bruce Springsteen-Born In The U.S.A. Side 1

Gary Morris-Stones Side 2

Al Stewart-Year Of The Cat Side B

Aerosmith-Rocks Side 1

Al Di Meola-Casino Side 2

With the exception of the Godfathers EP everything had very good SQ. Ms. Schmidt takes the SQ Crown over the Fishbone EP due to the slightly aggressive nature of the recording

@bslon +1 My favorite is "Not Too Late" 2007 I kind of lost interest after that release why? I’m very skeptical regarding new vinyl do you have a CD version to compare? How does this rate vs. her first 3 recordings?

@spiritofradio

I thought "Night In The Ruts" had the gossip? about Joe Perry not playing on the recording?

Red Holloway & Company(CJ-322) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Another Concord Jazz SQ win. SQ* played Wings before but did not have the very good SQ like today. An OP yard sale find in VG cover/VG+ vinyl. Will look for a better OP pass on repress. Procol Harum-What great music! Excellent cover of "Day By Day" from the 5TH. Hatchet’s "All Mine" has a Skynyrd type grind with extra power on tap, with good SQ for rock.

Carly Simon-Boys In The Trees Side 1

Patti Austin-The Real Me Side 2 SQ Audiophile

The Beatles-Revolver(early or original mono) Side 1

Preston Reed-Playing By Ear(FF 324) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Janis Siegel & Fred Hersch-Short Stories Side 1

Thx for all the positive comments. Preston Reed takes the SQ trophy. Could compare him to Michael Hedges but with a country edge. Siegel/Simon just missed Audiophile status, both with great content. Very Dionne is a solid Warwick album with an excellent version of "Yesterday".

Update-Started posting here on 4/14/20 with the (brilliant?) idea of playing my entire vinyl collection. This idea emerged from the myth that Audiophiles play the same 100 or so albums yet have vinyl collections in the thousands. This thread proves to some extent that's a fallacy. Since I started posting on this thread I have added about 250 vinyl albums bringing my total collection around 1800. From my estimated calculations I have played 1250 album sides with only about a 5% repeat rate. My Audiophile SQ recordings are >25% which is mainly due to Jazz/Vocals and Classical, no where near my desired 40%. Tonight I will start on my next 600!

Willie Nelson & Ray Price-San Antonio Rose Side 1 SQ*

Neil Diamond-Hot August Night Side 3 SQ Audiophile

Was not intended to be a vinyl night but due to system tweaking the playlist just followed. SQ* Willie/Ray has borderline Audiophile SQ. It’s a great pure country recording. Tough to claim a SQ winner Bracken/McRae/Diamond let’s make it easy... a 3 way tie. if unfamiliar with Greg Lake’s 1st solo album give it a listen.

@big_greg  You could kept both by doubling up the vinyl and keeping the best jacket. Still saves space... sometimes with multiple pressings there is no SQ winner.

Aerosmith-Classics Live Side 2

Linda Ronstadt-Don't Cry Now Side 2

Marian McPartland-At The Festival(CJ-118) Side 2 SQ Audiophile

McPartland takes the SQ Crown edging out Pavarotti might be demo quality. Ronstadt SQ was not up to her other recordings, mastering info not on album. "Full House" what a great classic rock LP with good SQ! The religious side of Elvis reminded me of a Blackwood Brothers recording, more Elvis less chorus.

Deep Purple-Nobody’s Perfect Side 3

Steve Winwood-Winwood Side 4

Another night of diversity. Forgot how good Pictures At Eleven is will play in entirety. Mr. Como gets the worst SQ crown those RCA and Dynagroove recordings are best avoided? Dave Grusin and Band take the SQ trophy with a top level fusion jazz recording.

@big_greg  Please let me know the SQ of your purchases. I'm looking for 'Toys In The Attic" "Tapestry" "Blow By Blow" "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Infinity". Not sure if Cheap Trick "Live At Budokan" was part of the series. I know Pink Floyd "Wish" and "Wall" would be difficult to find for <$100.

+1 @big_greg The claimed problem with the earlier released CBS Half-Speed’s is the treble is over accentuated. Not sure if I believe this since I only have 5 or 6 CBS Half/Speed albums. IMO they offer Audiophile SQ for a fair used price my Grofe/Grand Canyon and Silk Degrees have excellent SQ. I’m curious what your opinion is regarding this series.

John Cougar-Nothin’ Matters And What If It Did Side 1

Wynton Marsalis(Lincoln Center Orchestra)-Live In Cuba Side F SQ Audiophile

The only recording that was average was Elton, the CD might have better SQ? The 4 other recordings were excellent just missing Audiophile SQ. Eastern Rebellion takes the SQ trophy despite the silver(yuk) vinyl.

Maria Muldaur-Open You Eyes Side 2 SQ*

David Gates-Never Let Her Go Side 1 SQ Audiophile

The 5TH Dimension/Live!! Side 2

Scandal-Warrior Side 1

Pat Benatar-Precious Time Side 1

David Gates takes the SQ crown tonight since I gave a slight edge over his band Bread. Vocals were not as projected(forced) on his solo album. *Muldaur just misses with her Grundman mastered recording of very solid content. Sinatra takes last place with the Quadradisc format. Sounds much better in the original stereo format.

Led Zeppelin-In Through The Outdoor Side 2

Boz Scaggs-Slow Dancer Side 1

Nancy Wilson-Now Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Barbra Streisand-Yentl Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Jefferson Starship-Earth Side A

Yes, Led Zep was the SQ chump tonight. Ms. Wilson takes the SQ crown tonight despite a minor digital edge. For all the jokes "Feelings" has endured for 45+ years it's not a bad song or album. Is it great? No, but many people even some audiophiles praise lesser music.

John Cafferty And The Beaver Brown Band-Tough All Over Side 1

The Who-Who Are You Side 2

Pete Townshend-White City Side 1

The LA 4-ST(CJ-18) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Everything sounded very good tonight with several near Audiophile misses. Unfortunatley the great "Who Are You" had the weakest SQ. Both Annie and Karen were angelic with great songs. Yes, the LA 4 provided a breathtaking flute solo!

+1  @mammothguy54  "Watch" is my favorite Manfred Mann recording. "California" is perfection!!!

Edwin Starr-Hell Up In Harlem Side 1

Art Farmer-To Duke With Love Side 2 SQ*

Molly Hatchet-Double Trouble Live Side 4

Sammy Davis JR.-Now Side 1 SQ*

Greta Van Fleet-Anthem Of The Peaceful Army Side 2

Flip Phillips/Scott Hamilton-A Sound Investment(CJ-334) Side 2 SQ Audiophile

An abbreviated vinyl night? Always play 8 sides but due to answering a phone call... Everything sounded above average with the exception of Edwin Starr. Might be an original pressing which is disappointing since the content is top level R&B. SQ* Art and Sammy just missed Audiophile status maybe on another night?

+19  @noromance

Occasionally I do enjoy some extreme metal. Cathederal/Cradle Of Filth/Trivium and Crowbar are good starting points to feel 19 again!

Chick Corea-Return To Forever Side 1

Angela Bofill-Intuition Side 1

Lamb Of God-Killadelphia Side 4

George Shearing-Mel Torme-An Elegant Evening Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Wings-Greatest Hits Side 1

Despite only 1 marginal Audiophile SQ recording the music still prevailed. The only subpar SQ recording was Killadelphia as expected but the angst/violence still channeled thru me like I was 19! Santana and Angela’s LP’s were both overlooked late 80’s recordings that could be there best of the decade.

@sbank  -4 The LA 4 were a great jazz ensemble no stink here. I place zero value on "mainstream"  parody when regarding serious music!

Joan Baez-Come From The Shadows Side 1

The Phil Woods Quintet-Song For Sisyphus Side A SQ Audiophile

Orleans-Let There Be Music Side 1 SQ Audiophile

ELO-A New World Record Side 1

Roseanne Cash-Seven Year Ache Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Orleans just edges out Phil Woods for the SQ crown. If Roseanne's vocals were a little more laidback the SQ crown was hers. Ms. Baez takes the weakest link SQ crown. I think this was her first recording for A&M?  The 4 other recordings just missed Audiophile Status.

@arro222 No need to play psychiatrist here, it’s not needed or wanted! If you read my posts an effort is made regarding the SQ of the recordings I have played. If someone wants to stray off-topic I have no issue with that as long as it avoids religion/politics or vulgarity. Many would welcome you here if you decide to analyze the recordings played and not the posters.

Pink Floyd-A Momentary Lapse Of Reason Side 1 SQ*

Harry Connick JR.-20 Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Joe Jackson-Blaze Of Glory Side 2 SQ Audiophile

80’s vinyl night part 4 added 2 extra LP’s. Spun 36 albums in 4 different listening sessions and really enjoyed it. Blaze Of Glory Won the SQ trophy and with song writing to match. IMO a Top 25 pop/rock recording of the 1980’s SQ* Pink Floyd had a very expansive soundstage but clarity was slightly lacking? Metallica/SQ was somewhat disappointing since it’s an OP. Yes the bass is down in the mix but the narrow soundstage was more of an issue. Bangles were the weakest link in SQ and content might sound better on CD?

Stevie Ray Vaughan-Couldn't Stand The Weather Side 1

Yes it was 80's night part 3! Is part 4 upcoming? Everything sounded very good tonight. Sunday usually has the cleanest power(never put amp in my conditioner). Toni Tennille wins the SQ crown by several lengths! Was recorded live to 2 tracks and mastered by Bernie Grundman a true demo disc.

Billy Squier-Signs Of Life Side 2

Rickie Lee Jones-The Magazine Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Gary Moore-Victims Of The Future Side 2

Dazz Band-"Joystick" Side 1 SQ*

Blue Rodeo-Outskirts Side 2 SQ*

Miami Vice-VA Side 2

Part 2 of 80's vinyl night had better SQ results. The 3 SQ* were on the edge of Audiophile status. I would need to play both sides and have "cleaner" power then tonight for a decision. SQ of Magazine and Touch would rate a 4.5/5 I would give the SQ edge to Touch due to the vocal projection giving the recording a solid 3D effect.

White Lion-Big Game Side 1

Gerry Rafferty-North & South Side 1

Yes it was 80’s night so I spun a couple extra LP’s No surprise only 2/10 made Audiophile status. Missing Persons SQ was a disappointment since Bob Ludwig mastered it. Vocals were recessed and murky by choice? White Lion SQ was very good considering the genre. The Gatlin Brothers was the SQ champ tonight also delivering intelligent "country" lyrics. A top shelf 1980’s country album.

John Anderson-All The People Talking Side 1

Bud & Travis-...In Concert Act II

Debussy-La Mer MS 6077(6 eye) Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Either Vision Quest or Bud & Travis were the weakest SQ recordings tonight but both "Lunatic Fringe" and "Malaguena Salerosa" were very enjoyable. ARS gets the SQ crown with a very solid 3D soundstage. Great studio band!

+1 @slaw

Standing Hampton is one of my favorite pop/rock recordings from the 1980's.

@slaw Thx! I play 1 side to get as much variety of music genres in a single listening session. This also is helping me get through my entire vinyl collection at a faster rate. I will then be able to decide on upgrades and toss outs giving my vinyl collection complete organization.
