So much vinyl, so little time... Happy Listening!
Rushton, I find your explanation of the instrumentation only heightens my interest in hearing this recording and many of the others. I checked with Elusive Disc and they are currently listing it as out of stock. I went ahead and entered an order (it let me) in the hope that I might be fortunate enough to see it restocked, we'll see. Thank you again for the thoughtful words. With a little looking around I found a HiFi+ review of the Italian Violin Music 1600-1750 Open Window OW 002, they suggest it as one of their favorites also. Also found a Chinese website that describes six different albums of this series. Very intriguing. Sounds as though this path of music exploration just never ends... Bravo!
Thank you again gentlemen, I will keep looking around and they will show up eventually. I'm sure that it is just a matter of time until one surfaces. I appreciate very much knowing that they are out there, thanks to you. In doing a little research I have know read about six records in this catalog. And all is not lost, apparently I have the last copy elusive disc had of the German harpsichord music coming my way. I look forward to that. Best regards, Foster
Montepilot, Thanks for the Clemencic Consort recommendation. Upon a brief search to gain a little background it appears this will be a rather interesting undertaking as well. I will take your suggested heed to the timing for finding these recordings. René Clemencic looks to be a rather interesting fellow with quite the resumé.
Happy Listening!
Rushton and Slipknot1, I write bearing very interesting news apparently Elusive Discs' server said the album "il cornetto" was out of stock. Truth was, one copy remained and by entering an order anyway (yesterday), I will receive this last copy. I called to confirm the email that had me on the edge of my seat today! Let this be a lesson to all of us in ordering from Elusive Disc, some times if the record is still listed, there is one left regardless of the notation to the contrary. I'm elated to share in the experience of this sound recommendation from you. I would also like to thank you both again for all of the recommendations most recently. I will research each of these and hopefully find a few nice copies to expand on my classical catalog and mostly on our enjoyment here in Detroit. Winter's not over yet and with a set of ten Sylvania NOS 6SN7 GTB’s for my Atma’s in the mail to me it sounds as if next weekend will be a grand one.
Happy Listening. Cheers!
DANG! Rushton, my deepest sympathies go out to you on the cantilever mishap. Perhaps a great test of ones caricature to not start jumping up and down cursing at an inanimate object like Yosemite Sam from the WB cartoons. I must admit I would have failed the test and commenced to shoot’in something! (at least verbally). Ouch! To hear you reflecting on a more whimsical moment in time when what you did or more importantly, didn't do had seemingly lesser consequences shows perspective.
And yes there have been albums lately I find to come alive with my current TT set up and the tube amps. I formerly had SS and as good as it was it never revealed the sense of depth and texture, almost aliveness that is in my living room today. So many recordings have fleshed out to become a real sonic landscape and emotionally connect us with the music that I couldn’t list them all. One thing that has remained in the system though is my Linn Sondek Lp12 from 1983. Now sounding better than ever with a new Akiva cartridge. After hearing your story I will try to remember to be focused, focused, focused when at the ready to spin some wax. Hope to hear that your up and running soon.
There is an interesting irony in that your beloved Magic Diamond cartridge brought you closer to the Khatchaturian "Gayenah Ballet" just before you lost it. Best regards
Tom Waits & Crystal Gayle -One From The Heart (Soundtrack)of the Francis Ford Coppola movie, on Columbia
If you don't have this record, it's a beauty, maybe you should do yourself a favor before their all gone...

Tom Waits -Small Change on Asylum

Tom Waits -Bone Machine on NL Island Records

Tom Waits -Mule Variations on Epitaph

Happy Listening!
Rushton and Slipknot1, Yesterday I received both my 6SN7GTB's from andy at Vintage, my copy of "Il Cornetto" and "Stationen deutscher Cembalomisik" from Elusive Disc. Need I suggest it was quite the evening.

First off, the replacement of the Chinese Electron tubes was nothing less than stunning in every way. The smoothness and control of those old Sylvania valves from top to bottom was a huge step forward. They show consistent attention to detail throughout the presentation with a much nicer resolve of the tonality. I should have done this a long time ago! My Atma's sound gorgeous.

On to "Il Cornetto", Thank you gentlemen. The Klimo records are truly of excellent pressing quality and were nicely mastered. The performance was an unusual mix of instruments in tonality and texture (new to my ears) very pleasing and gently engaging. The acoustics were very nice, intimate but of a large enough scale to let all the instruments breath adequately. On both the third and seventh track on the first side I was struck by the clean, clear brassiness and scale (like that of a flugelhorn possibly?) of the lute. The contrast of the harpsichord and chamber organ played together is something I have not heard before and liked very much. Overall for me the experience was one of pleasure in the juxtaposition of musical caricatures and the interplay. Wow! Do I wish I had been there for the live performance. So often large scale symphonic works are lost on these ears. I don’t get it and they don’t move me, conversely these little gems are a joyful treasure IMHO. Cheers!
Rushton, I'm afraid we might be birds of a feather in that more than not when my area Hifi group gets together it is predominantly a social gathering not unlike many (none) classical music concerts these days. I find the friendships great and the talk is often stimulating yet somehow many never sit down and really listen to the music (or the systems). Seems a little odd... I try to show up with a bag full of records that beacon the listener. So far I'm having modest success. There is a time and place for everything and I'm tring to promoting some focus. Happy Listening!
Slipknot1 Congrad's on the new TT, I'm sure at this point your happy just to stay at home and spin vinyl at the drop of a hat! Do a lot of old acquaintances (i.e. well played records) sound like strange new friends? Happy Listening!

Tonight on the old Lp12:

Jazz at the PawnShop on Prophone Records

Beautiful live recording, it swings! God this record reminds me of my Dad and his love for Bennie Goodman. A truly fun ramp.

The Chambers Brothers -The Time Has Come on Columbia 360 sound.

Bill Evans -Out of the Cool on Impulse/Speakers Corner

Rushton, Hope the new cartridge is on the way. When it arrives I just pulled out a brown A&M (first) pressing of Teaser and the Fire Cat that I forgot I owned and I hate to say it but way back in November Wc65mustang commented that this pressing was “clearly superior to the MoFi. Not even close. I have both. The MoFi is a tad quieter but the A&M is simply much more dynamic.” Take a listen if you have a copy I think he’s right, in fact mine proved it. I had compared the Mofi to a tan copy (second or third press) back in the fall.

Wc65mustang, If your out there, that was an excellent call IMHO. Cheers!
Beth Orton - Daybreaker on Heavenly

Beth Orton - Central Reservation on Heavenly

Beth Orton - Trailer Park on Heavenly Ok, this one is a CD.

Tried twice before and finally caught here live. She visits the colonies too rarely for my liking. Beth performed at the Majestic Theatre on Thursday in Detroit. The place is a dump but she sounded stellar, very nice show and needless to say she's not too tough on the eyes either. The new material from "Comfort of Strangers" is quite good and will be out on vinyl straight away.
Happy Listening!
Arguably Australia's greatest pop group ever...

The Go-Betweens -16 Lovers Lane on Rebel Rec/Beggars Banquet

The Go-Betweens -Before Hollywood on Beggars Banquet

The Go-Betweens -Send Me A Lullaby on Rough Trade

So sorry to see you go, Grant McLennan may you rest in peace! Thanks for the music.
Just something I found on allmusic that helps sum it up...

Grant McLennan R.I.P.

Biography by Jason Ankeny

As the co-founder of Australia's beloved cult band the Go-Betweens, Grant McLennan established himself among the finest and most effervescent songwriters in contemporary pop music, a standing his subsequent solo career did little to alter. Born in Rock Hampton on February 12, 1958, McLennan was attending Brisbane University during the mid-'70s when he and fellow student Robert Forster decided to channel their shared affection for punk and '60s folk into a band; dubbing themselves the Go-Betweens, they issued a series of singles before recording their debut LP, Send Me a Lullaby, in 1982. Over the course of the decade to follow, the Go-Betweens emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the post-punk era, yet excellent LPs like 1983's Before Hollywood and 1987's Tallulah simply failed to find an audience; when 1988's brilliant 16 Lovers Lane failed to push the group to the stardom so many predicted, they disbanded, and McLennan began his solo career. After recording as one half of Jack Frost, a duo he formed with the Church's Steve Kilbey, he issued his solo debut, 1991's Watershed (credited, as was its 1993 follow-up, Fireboy, to G.W. McLennan). After 1995's double-LP Horsebreaker Star, he toured with a briefly reunited Go-Betweens before issuing his fourth solo effort, In Your Bright Ray. The Go-Betweens reunited again in 2000 and enjoyed a creative and critically acclaimed streak that lasted for four albums and a concert DVD. On May 6, 2006, McLennan died at his home in Brisbane at age 48.

If your familiar there's no need in an introduction, if your not, this band and singer/songwriter is well worth checking out. Again, Thanks Grant McLennan for all the great music!

New acoustic room treatments and everything is dialed in!

Miles Davis -Porgy and Bess on Columbia 6-eye Mono.

Flaming Lips -At War With the Mystics on WB.

Rushton! Good to see you back with vinyl... this must mean you have replaced the trusty 'ol Magic Diamond, may it RIP.

Hey, Have you seen the Danses Anciennes de Hongrie, Clemencic Consort conducted by Dr. René Clemencic is being released by Speakers Corner end of this month?

Thanks to you and Slipknot1 for the many recommends to the Clemenic Consort back some time ago. I'm starting to find a few selections. More later.

Happy Listening!
Zaikesman, I find "At War With the Mystics" to be a great continuation of where "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" left off. Mind you, some of the Lip's greatest work "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart" of 1993 or maybe "The Soft Bulletin" of 1999 IMHO but not one, not one of their releases has fallen on deaf ears in this house. Wayne Coyne and the fellows seem to continually up the ante with every mind-bending encounter. Rare are they who reinvent themselves and walk the fine line for their entire carrier as these folks have so poignantly. At their worst I genuinely love them and what they do. At their best I find them to be psychedelic geniuses. I also love them live, which adds a whole enhanced other element to what they do.

Happy Listening!
... In the way that many felt the lose of XTC for what they once were when they made "Skylarking" of 1986 with production by Todd Rundgren (personally IMHO, one, if not THE crowning achievement of their carrier) many may fall away from the Lips now due to their last two endeavors because refinement of the craft in all its aspects is confused with commercialism or the lose of some raw edge. If so then why note trash the fab four of "Abbey Road"?! I like what I hear, for what it is worth. Cheers!
Coleman Hawkins -Night Hawk on Prestige/Swingville 2016
This is another beautiful 45RPM Analogue Production reissue.

Ella and Qscar on Pablo/45RPM Analogue Production reissue.
Beautiful pairing. Sonically excellent.

Rolling Stones -Sticky Fingers on Mofi
Nice sonic detail and very quiet. Great guitar work once again. You can crank this one way up.

XTC -SkyLarking on a one-sided (B) white label test pressing from Virgin UK. What a find and yes it sounded supreme!

Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds on Transatlantic UK
One of my favorites from the hometown Detroit artist.

Bob Dylan -Modern Times on Columbia
What a solid album, the old guy's not nearly done yet.

Tom Waits -Mule Variations on Anti/Epitaph
Another strange and very cool outing. I can't tell you how disapointed I was to miss him in a rare live appearance at our opera hall. That might well have been a once in a life time event.

Doors -L.A. woman on Elektra/DCC
What more needs to be said, Steve Hoffman and vacuum tube cutting systems. Emmmmmm!

Tom Petty -Wildflowers on Warner Brothers.
Very under rated in my opinion. Nice.

We listened to quite a few more things but, these are the ones that stand out in my mind.

Happy Listening!
Slipknot1, It sounds like an amazing performance that you witnessed. It would favor more of us to reference our listening to a live experience. Some times we (I) get all caught up in the cables, tubes, and widgets, and things, when it's not really all about that, is it? ;^)
A dear friend and I had the rare fortune Tuesday, of getting tickets to our Detroit Masonic Temple to see Van Morrison. It was not acoustic of course but, an excellent performance just the same. And I would have to say between the thrill of a live performance and the sound of that beautiful old auditorium, it nicely challenged what we listen to at home.
There is no wonder why he is referred to as “Van the Man”. Happy Listening!
Well we're back and spinning a rather eclectic evening on the Sondek Lp12 along with Chinese carryout from R.O...

The Hot Spot [Original Soundtrack] with Miles Davis, Taj Mahal, John Lee Hooker, Roy Rogers, Earl Palmer and Tim Drummond. - Antilles/AP 45RPM

The original Antilles vinyl was rare and beautiful (Sounded excellent) but friends, this is a stunning line up and a soundtrack that only a Dennis Hopper movie could have had a hand in... Don't wait too long or the Antilles/AP 45 RPM version will be history too and you still won't have a copy in your library. The pressing quality and mastering are what Analogue Productions is so well known for, in a word, outstanding. This is another title that Chad of Acoustic Sounds and Acoustic Productions hunted down for years to repress for everyone else. Bravo! Chad Cheers!

Happy Listening!
Just reasonably burned in the Signature update on our Aesthetix Rhea and had the pleasure of some very rewarding analogue time...
