MIA for 2 weeks as my new cartridge(Phasemation pp 200) breaks in. After tonight the 200 has about 22 hours on it. Played which might be one of my most valuable $ vinyl recordings CJ-56 which did not disappoint in SQ or content. Only Bennett/Sinatra have been previously played.

Very diverse music content tonight. My wife got a kick out of Andy Williams following Alice Cooper! All 8 albums have NOT been previously played. Alice might have had the worst SQ but it did not distract the content. might be his best! If you enjoy female vocals with Audiophile SQ, Nicki Parrot is a must have!

With 4 SQ* near misses does NOT imply I was indecisvie, they just fell short of the top 2. Kim Carnes/Doug Sax take the SQ crown. Elvis had the worst SQ. Despite Elvis being on his last leg some magic still exists. IMO Secrets/Camouflage are overlooked with Stardust being over hyped. Willie is at his best with Honky/Tonk or Arlo Guthrie(type) ramblings. FWIW all 8 albums have NOT been previously played as I approach 90% of my vinyl collection played that started in April 2020.

Not a landmark night for SQ but even Krokus was very solid for hard rock. FYI all 8 albums have NOT been previously played. Two great Jefferson Starship songs Stranger/Save Your Love justify space on your record shelf. Gross/Head East Lp’s are very deep in content.

All 8 albums have NOT been previously played. Purchased about 2 dozen albums from a recent garage/yard sale! None of the albums had below average SQ but was disappointed with the SQ of Time Passages(could be my copy).

@slaw    I understand your point. I rarely comment on content due to its subjective nature. Sound quality is much more objective and IMO could be helpful. I wish more posters would comment on SQ.

@slaw    Thx for the reply. I aways mention SQ of an album(played) to help inform a potential buyer. We only have so much space on our shelves.

All albums have been previously played, lacked time to clean any non-played recordings. No recording had below average SQ. Skynyrd had to be "turned up" due to low recording volume(gain). What a voice Mr. Balin had, it’s unfortunate he only has a few 1980’s recordings. Diamond Mine is another great recording from 1989! Phil Woods takes the SQ crown with a demo level recording.

Only Joni and Joel were previously played as I strive to pass the 90% level of played LP’s in my entire vinyl collection. Shocked by the SQ level of the Al Green repress but still not enough to dethrone Jackie & Roy. "Turnstiles" is such an overlooked Joel recording, second only to his masterpiece "The Stranger". Finally spun Foreigner 4 which might be the last(unsealed) 1980’s Pop/Rock or R&B album played in my vinyl collection.

The J. Giles Band-Bloodshot(OP Red Vinyl) Side 1 SQ*

Power quality was top notch tonight. My SQ grading might have been tough tonight but all 4 SQ*(near misses) are a solid level below Net Man in SQ. Cassidy was my wife's first LP(her copy) so I finally spun it, better than expected. J. Giles Band might be the most overlooked AOR band of the 1970's. Bloodshot is easily in my Top 100 Pop/Rock albums of the 1970's but never makes any of the critics/experts lists. Millie Jackson is better without the vulgarity!

@slaw Jon Butcher released 5 albums during the 1980’s, 2 for Polydor and 3 on Capitol. "Pictures From The Front"-1989 is at least the equal of his best seller "Wishes"-1987. Anyone that appreciates well crafted AOR/Arena Rock should not be disappointed.

Played last night. Was not being over generous with SQ ratings, the power had an added jump factor to my system. Very difficult picking a SQ champ tonight since everything had elevated SQ. Still in progress of playing my entire vinyl collection, The Call and 1700 were first time plays. Have added about 250 albums in the past year with about 45 still sealed. After 4+ years close to 90% of my vinyl has been played with around 5-6% of unplayed or unwanted vinyl will be thrifted due to condition or having multiple copies.

@mofimadness    +1   Alannah Myles! Despite "Black Velvet" being the standout song on the album the rest of the tracks make for a 5* recording. FWIW another great recording from 1989!

Thought I played a solid mix of some obvious and some overlooked 1960’s recordings. Brasil '66 easily takes the SQ crown! Getting towards the end of playing ALL my vinyl records. Roselli and Brasil ’66 were unplayed leaving about 2% remaining of this 5 year project.

Thought "Heartland" Pop/Rock would be an honorable tribute on Memorial Day. Nothing had remarkable SQ but no recording did disservice to the music. IMO Mellencamp had the best SQ but excessive treble energy kept it from Audiophile status.

Nothing had below average SQ tonight. James Williams/Carol Rosenberger were the only previously unplayed albums tonight. FWIW I will have more(updated) statistics with my next post(s).

Baker Street/Night Owl/North and South are equal in content with Baker Street having the edge in SQ. Night Owl has always had a flat/thin perspective on all my various systems and even when demoed on all tube gear. Tonality and clarity is there so the SQ does not diminish the music unlike the 1979 Born To Run repress I played last night. Maybe a Japanese/UK or Euro pressing of Night Owl is worth seeking out?

Eddie Money-Playing For Keeps Side 2 SQ*

Julie London-Tenderly Yours(Guest Star GS 1447) Side A

Played last night had internet issues. Carol Rosenberger and Springsteen had not been previously played. Ironic that Schubert was the SQ champ and Born To Run had very mediocre SQ. Maybe the OG has better SQ or a Japanese pressing?

@bslon    +1   Whenever "Night Owl" is played/mentioned I will always give a shoutout! Might be the most overlooked singer/songwriter recording of the 1970's.

Played "Days" in tribute to Mike Pinder. Since collecting vinyl around 2010 Uriah/TDN and The Moody Blues have become favorite 1970's acts that were relatively unknown(to me) before collecting. What a great version of "Liar". Wynton is superb as usual and Marcus Robert's playing is sublime on tonight's SQ winner.

Statistical Update/Correction

Found a shelf which consisted of R&B albums. 46 from the 1970’s and 27 from the 1980’s and a handful from the 60’s which will be tabulated later. Also found a few more "Live" and "Fusion Jazz" LP’s.

Update

1970’s Pop/Rock 560

1980’s Pop/Rock 320

70’s//80’s Fusion Jazz 112

70’s Live LP’s 66

4 Audiophile SQ recordings shatters my average of < 25% Close call on all 4 for the SQ crown. The award goes to Vocalese which is 1 of the best Jazz Fusion vocal albums of the 80’s and Mirage A Trois could make claim as the best instrumental Fusion Jazz album from the 1980’s despite the tough competition.

Promised some statistical facts...

*514 Pop/Rock 70’s LP’s

*293 Pop/Rock 80’s LP’s

*64 Live Pop/Rock LP’s 70’s

*25 Live Pop/Rock LP’s 80’s

107 Jazz Fusion LP’s 70s-80’s

*Includes R&B NOT Country. Only the 1970’s might have close to 5% of unplayed albums. Only a few compilation (KTEL etc.) have not been played from the 1980’s. Jazz Fusion might have some Gap Mangione/Tim Weisberg and possibly a Pat Metheny(have 9 albums) that are unplayed. Not sure what live albums I have not played but will go over again with specific results. Classical/Country/Easy Listening/Blues/Folk/World/50’s-60’s and Jazz will have an Acoustic and Vocal breakdown.

All 7 recordings have not been previously played. Might have played all my 80’s vinyl with the exception of a few sealed albums. Concord gets the edge over Garfunkel due to a liquid/relaxed flow that many live Japanese recordings possess. If you only want one 1980’s Denver studio recording consider "Seasons". Recently acquired Grace Slick-Dreams a must for Starship or even Airplane fans.

Patti Austin-Body Language Side 1 Audiophile

Only White Lion was previously played. Power quality was an issue tonight, so no near misses SQ*(not sure). Can't award an SQ crown tonight but Patti/Valentin clearly had the best SQ of the 8 recordings. London Town might be 2nd best(in content} of all Wings studio recordings. If you enjoy power/pop don't dismiss Round Trip.

With 3 Audiophile and 3 near misses(SQ*) makes for a very special night. Only Hornsby had SQ that diminished the excellent content. Lazarof had possible demo level SQ, would need to spin again but easily takes the SQ crown. Gordon Brisker is another great(overlooked) jazz album with 5* content and sound.
