Billie Eyelash, Lorde, Adele, Lizzo, Halsey, Lana Del Ray, et. al. flooding the universe with unstoppable forces. Got to get in touch with your feminine side. And no leering! Not the worst section on the pop music map. Not by a long ways. Common ground with our daughters. And the music’s not all that bad, really. |
Here’s, I think, a fun story. After reading Dayglow’s post just yesterday, I ordered a NM copy of Cedar Walton’s “Soundscapes” yesterday off Discogs. Today it shows up at my door in a mailer but with no postage. Turns out I bought it from a record merchant just a mile and a half up the road from my house, Jump Jump Records. It’s a store that I’ve never been in because Dan, the sole proprietor, doesn’t really keep regular hours and the few times I’ve tried he wasn’t around. Called him and thanked him for the favor and fastest delivery ever. Nice guy. |
Steve, you know, I like it. Ripley has been around for awhile and is of course pretty well known here in the Northwest. I’ve been listening to his stuff in various solo and collaborative iterations for awhile and have always been interested but never bought any of his records before. This one is nice. Kinda mello. I like it. |
@slaw 👍 you introduced me/us to Mountain Goats. |

@dayglow Thanks! I’ve got a copy of “Soundscapes “ on order. I do know Yellowjackets pretty well and agree. Fun music. Have quite a lot of fusion and other progressive stuff generated in the 80’s. I should have said that for me new offerings of Jazz & Classical never grew tiresome. I’m curious though. We’ve read with interest about your most excellent record collection and your most admirable approach to getting through it relatively systematically, but are you buying many new records? |
Yes, and apologize if my hasty and unskillful writing left you with any impression I was unhappy. Quite the contrary. I do so much appreciate the information I get here from you and the other members about what’s worth trying now in an older and more open minded frame of mind. Will try/re-try those recommendations. in fact, even if I don’t wind up really liking things I still get a lot of fun out of trying and do enjoy the dialogue. You know what I mean. |
I think it was still the Wreck of the Hesperus, through the early 80s. I confess “refreshing “ is not an adjective I would have applied to New Wave during its time… I’ve become open to agreeing that I did miss out, but like the friends you mention, as far as new music went I was either into continuing to favor the few 60s and 70s bands that survived or fusion. One of “those” guys I suppose. |
I saw Mr. Walton play/leading a 6 or 7 piece band at Sweet Basil (NYC) in either late 85 or early 86. Fantastic and very memorable set in large part because it featured Steve Turee out front on his bass trombone. Turee also played his trademark shells on some charts. This was my introduction to Turee and since then he’s been one of my favorite trombone players. And, he’s featured on “Soundscapes”. Thanks for posting that record - I didn’t know about it. |
Your last 3 posts are representative of a period during which I was buying very little new music. The 80’s seemed like a wasteland to me. I am open to re-education though and appreciate the ideas and recommendations from you and others here. I want to believe that there’s probably some good stuff from the 80’s that I missed. |
@pkatsuleas +1 I feel the same way about my Fleet Foxes records. |
@boxer12 Man, that sounds like a great piece of equipment. We’re you able to make the change yourself? Great to hear about the resulting improvements. Well done. |

Sounds so good. Interesting, horns (which I’m almost sure we’re added late in the mix) sound like they’re recorded very differently than the principal voice and instruments which are forward, sharply defined, and alive. The horns are recessed and flat relative to the rest. Not bad but different. Not that I care or anything... Just never used to consistently notice stuff like this until I started hanging out with you dudes…. They say some stereo owners can be faulted to listening to their gear more than they do their music. I think I may in fact be guilty once in awhile of listening to recordings and production more than to the music itself. Sometimes. Mostly I’m lost in the music. Like yesterday I had my own personal early heavy rock fest. What a trip on this stereo. |
@reubent Far Out Tom! Did you wear your bell bottom jeans to the dance? |
@sbank The veil is lifted. |
