@spiritofradio Thanks for the link to Carrie Manolakos cover. I did enjoy it but it wasn't that great for me vocally. The bass player and the lovely and animated backup singer were awesome. At the end of the day, nothing beats this version and then there's Jim Carrey...the hell! |
Ian & Sylvia – Northern Journey (Vanguard 1964 mono)
Canadian bluegrass.

@slaw Yeah. Hawkwind et al every now and again. Motorhead's not really my scene but no problem with them. Lemmy's great on Lost Johnny and The Watcher.
Nik Turner’s Sphynx - Xitintoday (Charisma 1978)
Out there. Love this album. Reminds me of another life. Recorded in the Great Pyramid of Giza. Twin godesses of truth. The booklet's a riot too.
Gilbert And Sullivan, D'Oyly Carte Opera Company With New Promenade Orchestra – Iolanthe, The Gondoliers - "Highlights" (Richmond )

@tomic601 good to see you're back on form. +1 Ten New Songs.
Got a new tonearm! Played a ton of stuff but no time to list tonight.
Love Rosie too. My Girl is perfect.
These are truly special recordings and knock the socks of most modern recordings. Mahalia Jackson - I Believe (Columbia 1960) Benny Goodman - Trio, Quartet, Quintet (Victor 1956) Shirley Horn Trio - A Lazy Afternoon (Steeplchase 1979) The Seekers - The Best of the Seekers (Capital mono 1967) Erroll Garner - Solitare (Mercury mono 1955)
@grey9hound Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - I'll Love You Till the End of the World is one of my favorite songs.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps (Reprise 1979)
I guess you're keeping us in the dark on the new tonearm for a reason, but I'm going to make a guess. I hope it's the Trans - Fi. @slaw Not at all. ;-) I added some pics on the systems page. It's a custom arm beautifully made (by the guy who made my 401 bearing) and based on the Well Tempered concept. |
@tomic601 MI into the RIAA's got to be better than all that MC stuff!
I take a few days away and @noromance leaves team Jelco for parts unknown ??? @tomic601 Can't stick with the same girl forever! |
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring Buddy Tate /Al Grey - Just Jazz Lydia Loveless - Who is Lydia? Roy Harper - The Unknown Soldier (orig Harvest) Purcell - Ode on St. Cecilia's Day (Archiv London 1969) |
@tomic601 girls... plural... Still have the 9" 850 in use and the 12" 850 can go to the walnut 401. And then there's the two 12" 750 left over. |
@slaw Can’t go wrong with Hope! The McGarrigle sisters do a lovelier rendition of the song Heart Like a Wheel (they wrote it).
@slaw uh oh, "respectable?" That can’t be good. In fairness Linda does a nice job too.
The Walkabouts - Satisfied Mind The Walkabouts - Travels in the Dustland Tom Waits - Blue Valentine
Helen Humes - ’Sneakin’ Around’
Buddy Rich Band - ’Buddy Rich Band’
Erroll Garner - Erroll Garner Gems (Columbia 1955) - even though it crackles, the piano on this is breathtaking.
Ketty Lester - Love Letters (Mono)
Wovenhand - Mosaic
Grateful Dead - American Beauty
@tomic601 Yeah, the arm is pretty substantial and well made. It's been a little tricky optimizing as there are so many variables. Initial impressions at this time are favorable (considering the cost.) Wider and deeper soundstage while maintaining imaging. Improved color, timbre, and musicality. It might concede a teeny bit to the Jelco 850 at the very top of the frequency range. I am using minimal damping. Speakers have disappeared even more.
The biggest change though is a removal of some harshness I didn't know was there without losing detail. Literally like opening a very clean window. Interesting.
Is the tonearm a stock item or did they custom build it for you. @uberwaltz He's a one man hobbyist who makes bearings for Garrard/Lenco and various sundry parts over on LH. He's made a few of these arms to order. |
@slaw It’s very viscous. I’d say about 1/5 of the lower part of the ball is in it.
The o-ring on the end of the armtube @slaw It's an optional damper (and to stop the weight sliding off if loosened and working on cartridge.) The armtube is adjustable for effective length and locked in by allen bolt. |
Mike Oldfield – Ommadawn (Virgin 1975)
Kevin Ayres And The Whole World - Shooting at the Moon (Harvest 1970)
Delightful, and apparently an expensive collector's item. |
@boxer12 Streaming The Good Life.
I have The Good Life - Everybody's Coming Down but it's not their best. |
+1 @spiritofradio
Robert Wyatt – The End Of An Ear (CBS 1970) [1977 RE]
Frank Zappa – Sheik Yerbouti (Zappa 1979) |
Frank Zappa – Joe's Garage Acts II & III (Zappa 1979)
Masterpiece. Great recording too.
Wooden Wand - Death Seat (Young God 2010) Future classic.
For those who are following the new tonearm: today, it's opening up on top so forget the earlier comment about the highs vs the Jelco.
16 Horsepower – Sackcloth ’N’ Ashes A&M 1995) [RE on LP (Music On Vinyl 2012)]
What better than driving, religious fervor in the poems of a madman to spur the stirrup? |
Rod McKuen – Greatest Hits (Warner 1969) As French as the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas but it works.
Steve Hillage – Live Herald ( Virgin 1979)
Gong – Camembert Electrique (BYG 1971)
Gilli Smith's voice. That is all.
@boxer12 Starless & Bible Black? It’s a King Crimson album! And... from 1965: The Stan Tracey Quartet - Starless and Bible Black |
Doc Evans – At The Gas Light (Audiophile 1967)
Awesome recording and wonderful Dixieland jazz. In the room dynamics. This is how it's done.
Current 93 - Thunder Perfect Mind (The Spheres 2017 [1992])
Don't buy this. Don't listen to it.
Jackie Washington – S/T (Vanguard 1962 mono)
Love this record. Lovely voice. He does a version of an American folk song called Nottamun Town. It sounded familiar. The melody of the same version was used by Bob Dylan for his 1963 song "Masters of War" on the album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. So strike one against Dylan for me.
Black Sabbath – Never Say Die! (Vertigo 1978) The third record I ever bought. NM first pressing.
Ha! @bkeske. As long as I don't collapse!
