What Do the Numbers in the Diamonds On Teles Mean

I just Have a few Telefunken tubes which appear to have the proper <> inside the pins. There is generally a number also imprinted. What if anything does that number mean? Is that a date code, a simple batch code, a tube type designation code etc. Thanks
