what causes repeat grooves on records?

Every now and again a record(usually one which has been played a fair bit) developes a "repeat groove" where the stylus gets stuck. This ruins the listening experience and is very frustrating.
There seems to be no cure but what is the cause? I hate to lose records this way despite careful cleaning and handling

I agree with Dopgue. The rule is always start with the maximum not the minimum recommended tracking force. Anti skate is opposite. Too little is better than too much. Your records will last longer and sound better.
