What artist did I heard on John Schaefer's New Sounds radio program?

Did anybody out there listen to listen to John Schaefer's New Sounds radio program in the 80s and 90s? There was this group I heard way back then that I've been for years trying to remember. What I recall is that is was kind of dark,  kind of medieval sounding and it had a female vocalist who sang in an operatic style. I know I heard it on New Sounds. Not much to go on but maybe there's an adventurous listener out there who knows. Thanks and happy listening.
