Van Morrison - Latest Record Project, Vol. 1 - Qobuz Hi-Res. Van sounds angry and resentful on some of these tunes, which is a bit of a put off (for me), but there is a lot of "classic" sounding Van on here as well, which makes it a worthwhile listen. |
The Black Keys - Delta Kream, Qobuz Hi-Res. This is pretty cool, a set of low-key Mississippi blues covers. |
@luisma31 I listened to it on my near field system, which doesn't do a great job with soundstaging. I'll have to check it out in the main system! |
Juliana Hatfield - Blood, Qobuz Hi-Res. Reminds me of some of Liz Phair's best work. Apparently recorded at home during the pandemic.
|
CSNY - Deja Vu, Qobuz. It sounded so good on my computer system I had to check it out on the main system. |
Sara Bareilles - Amidst the Chaos: Live from the Hollywood Bowl (Live from the Hollywood Bowl), Qobuz Hi-Res
|
Robert Finley - Sharecropper's Son, Qobuz Hi-Res. Really enjoyed this. |
Neil Young - Harvest, Qobuz Hi-Res
|
Bachelor - Doomin' Sun, Qobuz Hi-Res. This one is getting favorited. Good stuff! |
black midi - Cavalcade, Qobuz Hi-Res. If you like King Crimson, you might like this. |
@16f4 What did you think of Moby Reprise? I was kind of disappointed. Sometimes I like it when artists re-work their catalog, but I don't think he did any favors to his previous work. |
Allison Russell - Outside Child, Qobuz Hi-Res. Wow, is she talented!
|
@16f4 I might not have been open to receiving such a different version of his work when I listened. Funny how your mood / attitude can have such an impact on how you perceive things. I know I had a little bit of attitude going on, like "he's milking his past, he must have run out of creative energy" when it could have just as easily have been "he's willing to take a risk and reinterpret his work". |
Blackberry Smoke - You Hear Georgia, Qobuz Hi-Res. Good stuff! I especially like the track which features Warren Haynes as a guest (All Rise Again). |
Liz Phair - Soberish, Qobuz Hi-Res. If you liked her debut, I think you'll like this. This might be my favorite new release of the year, definitely one of them. |
Garbage - No Gods No Masters, Qobuz Hi-Res
|
Charles Mingus - Mingus At Carnegie Hall (Deluxe Edition) [2021 Remaster] [Live] (Live), Qobuz. Fantastic!
|
@16f4 The musicianship was really great on that recording also. It seemed like everyone was "on". |
Sleater-Kinney - Path of Wellness, Qobuz. I liked this a lot, they seem to have matured a lot as musicians and songwriters. That might not be a plus for fans of their early output, but I think it's more "accessible". |
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real - A Few Stars Apart, Qobuz Hi-Res. I'm not usually much of a country fan, but this is really easy to listen to.
|
Danny Elfman - Big Mess, Qobuz Hi-Res. I believe this is only his second solo album. It's not a movie soundtrack, which is what he is known for (along with being the frontman for Oingo Boingo). Probably not what you might expect. |
Chick Corea - Return to Forever, Qobuz hi-res |
Attacca Quartet - Real Life, Qobuz Hi-Res. What do you get when you mix a classical string quartet with electronica? This. I like it.
|
Alice Coltrane - Kirtan: Turiya Sings, Qobuz Hi-Res.
These are some "found" (by her son Ravi) recordings of her chanting in Sanksrit accompanied by her Wurlitzer organ, which on the surface, doesn't sound like a fun time, but her voice and the organ are very soothing and I found it a very enjoyable listen. |
Dee Gees (Foo Fighters) - Hail Satin, Qobuz. I'm not really a Foo Fighters fan, and thought I wouldn't care for a Bee Gees tribute, but they actually did a very good and respectful homage to the Bee Gees. Unfortunately, there are some Foo Fighters songs at the end, which don't hold up to the Bee Gees songs, not to mention the stark contrast it creates. |
Darkside - Spiral, Qobuz Hi-Res. Pretty cool mix of electronics and guitars that doesn't fit into a neat "category". |
Billie Eilish - Happier than Ever, Qobuz Hi-Res. I really like this, she has a great voice and the lyrics are really sharp and insightful and the production is great.
|
Los Lobos - Native Sons, Qobuz Hi-Res. This is a really cool set of cover songs (except for one original composition) of artists from L.A., all tastefully done. |
More L.A. themed music - Naia Izumi - A Residency in the Los Angeles Area, Qobuz Hi-Res. This guy has some chops! It's in the "soul" category, but it could also fall into funk, prog rock, or jazz. There's some really nice guitar work and the production is really good. |
Prince - Welcome 2 America, Qobuz Hi-Res. A "found" album. It was Prince, so there's that, but it was kind of "meh". |
Lump - Animal, Qobuz Hi-Res. This is one of my favorite recent discoveries, very cool blend of electronica and folkish songs. |
Son Volt - Electro Melodier, Qobuz Hi-Res. |
The 50th Anniversary "Super Deluxe" edition of George Harrison's All Things Must Pass on Qobuz Hi-Res. It includes a bunch of extras curated by his son Dhani. I'm not sure I'll spend the 4 1/2 hours to wade through all the extras, but the album proper sounds really wonderful. |
Brian May - Back to the Light, Qobuz Hi-Res. This sounds really dated, which makes sense since it was released in 1993. It sounds more like 1980. As much as I love Queen and Brian May's amazing guitar playing, I couldn't really get into this. |
Sheryl Crow - Live From the Ryman And More, Qobuz Hi-Res. |
Madeleine Peyroux - Secular Hymns, Qobuz Hi-Res. Fabulous!
|
I listened to the new Lorde album on Qobuz yesterday, kind of in the backgroud, not serious listening. I liked it, she is really talented. Looking forward to sitting down for a serious listen.
Before that I listened to Leslie Winer - When I Hit You — You'll Feel It on Qobuz. Lots of social commentary and some very cool "trip-hop", it brought Massive Attack to mind in some ways.
Currently listening to Disclosure - Never Enough EP on Qobuz with the headphones. Good stuff. This would be better on the main system with some subwooferage. |
Another Side of John Coltrane, Qobuz |
Sarah Jarosz - Build Me Up from Bones, Qobuz
|
I've seen her mentioned a few times, but wasn't familiar with her. Good stuff! |
Sarah Jarosz - Blue Heron Suite, Qobuz Hi-Res
|
Thanks Jim, I'll check it out. |
Bardo Pond - Dilate. A nice discovery from the What's On Your Turntable thread. |
Martina Topley Bird - Forever I Wait, Qobuz Hi-Res. It's hard (for me) not to make comparisons to her work with Tricky, but this stands up really well on its own.
|
On DSCH - Igor Levit, Qobuz Hi-Res
|
Pat Metheny - From This Place, Qobuz Hi-Res |
Candlebox - Wolves, Qobuz. I like most of this, but it's a little uneven, like maybe they are trying out different genres and not sure who they are in 2021. |
Adia Victoria - A Southern Gothic, Qobus Hi-Res. Check this one out! |
Solem Quartet - The Four Quarters, Qobuz Hi-Res. |
Lindsey Buckingham - S/T, Qobuz Hi-Res. |
