What are you hearing?

Seeking the holy grail for listening can be very expensive (and worth it). I wish I could have all of the the equipment I have owned over the years for 1 day. From time to time, I catch myself thinking, years ago I had this preamp or those speakers. I remember the the characteristics even down to (some) nuances. But how accurate are those memories? My hearing has declined over the years (rock concerts in the 70's). So I wonder, what was I hearing back then? Is it really relative to today? I don't think my quest for a specific type type of of sound has changed radically, but some of the music I listen to has. I use to have a McIntosh mc2500 amp some years ago. I could swear it sounded warmer and richer than my 601's? My dad had a pair of Pioneer Sonic speakers when I was 17. Best speakers ever! A few years ago my dad set up his stereo system again and there were the Sonic's. Worst speakers ever!

vintage stuff was built far better and more honest. therefore sounds better. today components only have better descriptions and commercials.
