Key quote from the article: we demonstrated for the first time that it can be a transverse wave under certain conditions. Allow me to translate: "We did some crazy esoteric experiments no one will find useful for 20 years (if even then), but it was unexpected and we spent a ton of money so cut us some slack, okay?"
