I can't speak for the phono section but after a few tube swappping sessions I found some tube magic with the Mullard Miltary spec CV4003 and Electro Harmonix 12AT7 combination.

I hope that the other owners of this fine preamp could offer suggestions for upgrading the stock tubes.
It uses 2 12AU7's and 2 6350's in the linestage section.
3 12AX7's in the MC phono section.
