vintage tuner: McIntosh or Sansui?

Looking for an attractive, good sounding tuner in the <$600 range. I was thinking of Sansui TU-517 or TU-717 ...
vs. ... a McIntosh like a MR73 or MR77.

Is there a significant difference in performance?

My vote - Sansui TU-717. Classic good looks, great stock performance, regular $200-$300 availability, and favorite of many modifiers for even better performance.

FM Tuner Info is a good stop for more information. There are plenty of really good sounding, [relatively] inexpensive tuners out there (McIntosh included) - it's just silly not to have one if you have some decent stations in your area.

Good hunting!
Elevick,
Which Marantz do you recommend?
I have the Marantz 2250B receiver and its tuner is pretty good but, I think it's a little "fussy" dialing in reception.

Thanks guys. Just closed a deal on a TU-717 for $150.
Looks to be in great condition .. will see on delivery.

I have a NAD-4100 tuner and a Marantz 2250B receiver. I'll compare against them.

Macs do keep their value, but have to say after finding a Tandberg 3001 tuner the mac is now on the basement shelf with some unused equipment.
McIntosh no competition. And guess what you won't lose a penny if you want to sell it
At that price range you could also look into a Meridian 504 - very sleek looking and very musical and also many years newer than the ones you listed.
I have had many tuners in the last 35+ years. I settled in with the Sansui TU-717 and still have two of them. Last year I bought a Sansui TU-919 and had it moddified by Joseph Chow. I added a Magnum Dynalab ST-2 antenna an MD Signal Sleuth (signal amp). Very good performance!
Either one, especially the Sansui TU9900,the TU-X1 is impossible to find and most Mac's like the MR74,75,77,78,80 etc. will all bring a smile.I have the TU9900 and the MR77 and always will till the next one comes around.Just kidding,YMMV,Bob
Rob!! i have the Sansui TU-717 that i have not been using for several years. Purchased the full Sansui system with integrated amp and tape deck and tuner back in 77 but i am not using them. I would be willing to sell the tuner to you if you are interested. $500. I DO NOT have the original boxes or paperwork! I hope this doesn't go against Audiogon rules?????????? Don't know the current polices but i saw your post and am mentioning. That may be an issue with this post? I apologize to the audiogon gods if so : \ please post here though as have changed my email since this account has been set up and will need to get in contact with you. I am valid and not a scammer. Check my profile out. Cheers!
