(Used) speaker cable replacement suggestions for Virtual Dynamics David?

Hi Guys –

I have been happy with my Virtual Dynamics David speaker cables for many years, but having moved to Europe and built a largely new system, I suspect that they may not be quite as synergistic as they were with my previous system. So, while I am well-aware of how difficult it is to recommend with confidence given the vagaries of system synergy and room acoustics, etc., I'd welcome any thoughtful suggestions.

My previous system included:

Jeff Rowland Concentra I

EMC-1UP CD player

Green Mountain Audio Callisto speakers

Accuphase T-101 tuner

New system:

Modified and re-capped Accuphase E-303x

Harbeth P3ESR speakers

EMC-1UP CD player (same as above)

Accuphase T-103 tuner

A few additional footnotes:

– my room acoustics suck, i.e. lots of hard surfaces, irregular dimensions, etc.

– I actually do have my Callistos here in storage now, but have not A-B'd them with the Harbeth/Accuphase

– I do not assume that one speaker is necessarily better than the other, but have found the Harbeth to be very open and forgiving of the poor listening space

– I confess that sound, while primary, is not the only reason for my considering a replacement of the Davids, as it would also be nice to work with something less thick and stiff

– broadly speaking I listen mainly to jazz, funk, and world music

– not looking to spend big money, so please keep any specific suggestions under around $1000 (used)

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Thanks for your response. Your question is fair, and I don't have a clear answer to give. As both you and I (in my initial post) have suggested, there are several other variables that may well be responsible for my not being quite as satisfied with the current system.

Of course it would make sense for me to try the GMA speakers before switching cables, but the combination of the hassle (they are matched with very heavy Osiris stands, etc.), and the very attractive openness of the Harbeths, lead me in the direction of perhaps trying a different cable instead.

Oddly enough I can't really say that the Davids are lacking in anything in particular, so I suppose I am curious about opinions on other excellent cables that are relatively inexpensive on the used market.

What I can say, however, is that I tend to emphasize the importance of accuracy, imaging, mid-range and highs, and am not especially concerned with the very low registers.
Hi Bob,

Thanks very much for your kind offer, and the details of your set-up and experiences.

I would be happy to take you up on your offer, except for the intractable problem that I am now living in Europe.

I have also moved forward since the original post, and am using a Hegel integrated amp, along with the larger Harbeth 30.1 speakers. I am currently using an old pair of Audience AU24 cables that I have had for years.

Thanks again for your efforts, though!

Regards,

Tony
