Tune of the Day

"Blue Rondo a la Turk"  on the Two Generations of Brubeck album.  Wow.

There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8?  I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes.  This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it.  Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too.  It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.

You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All".  And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".

For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.

I am in Cincinnati, hello neighbor. I checked your links for Dawg Yawp. I gotta say it is different. Not bad even. They are very talented and very unique. Honestly, it's not something that I would normally gravitate towards. And I like a wide range of music. But I'm going to play it again tomorrow. Maybe they will grow on me.

Nutty,

Yep, it's a little off the beaten path. Not often you hear a sitar fronted band. I think it's kind of cool, especially because they are local and were "discovered" while working as bus boys at a local restaurant I've been known to frequent. I also think the lead singer sounds a lot like another local guy - Chuck Clever from Ass Ponys and now with Wussy.

Nutty,

U from Cincinnati? Dawg Yawp might resonate a bit more with you because they local. Discovered while working at Taste of Belgium in OTR. The World Cafe Interview is pretty cool if you get a chance to listen.

The music is definitely modern folk and it might be not appeal to everyone. But it is new and it is different. And I'm always hearing from people that they want to hear something new and different. We'll here ya go....
reubent,
I'm gonna research Dawg Yawp now. Will revert back with my most humble opinion.

Meantime, I need to drop this one on you guys.

OK Guys,

I can't take it any longer! I dropped Dawg Yawp on you a few days ago, and NO response? It's DAWG YAWP! A sitar based singing/songwriting duo with deeply introspective lyrics and a quirky delivery. I can't take it! You have to "Throw me a Bone" and provide some kind of feedback.

FYI, In case you want to know the Dawg Yawp story, check out the World Cafe Interview below.....

"Solitary Man" & "Red Red Wine"  Neil Diamond from "Hot August Nights" MFSL.

Close to perfection!
"Crin", by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, on her "Rapsodia" album.  Wild and crazy violinist playing a short but fascinating piece.  It's on both Tidal and Spotify.  If you like it, try also "Something With Voice" on her "Take Two."
reubent,

Thanks for posting those links. I remember checking out their later releases a while back and it's been long enough now that I can't remember if they were available on vinyl at all, or just out at that time. They do have some great music. Love Cracker as well.
Hey Slaw,

Have you heard these 2 tracks from the newer Camper Van Beethoven records? They are both really, really good.....

"Northern California Girls" - from La Costa Perdida

"Camp Pendleton"- from El Camino Real

Ok people,

I've listened quite a bit this weekend, I've made recommendations, etc..

I desired a lp that would take me places I needed to be in order to (wrap) up my weekend..

I found it in Glen Hansard's tribute to Jason Molina .."It Was Triumph We Once Purposed.."

The 1st song.. "being In love" really sets the tone..

I'm now in heaven!

Please seek this on out.

Cheers!
Try this one on a nice Sunday Morning......

Quite possibly the cutest rock chick EVER!

Just living on a Sunday morning, got my toast and tea and I'm warm and I
Just thought I'd think about. all the things to get and keep getting, never
Enough not enough and never ending. I just thought I'd think about. and it might be...

The comfort of a knowledge of a rise above the sky above could
Never parallel the challenge of an acquisition in the here and now.

Parody of yourself in color, giving it to everybody but your mother. you've got much to
Think about. soaring higher with every treason. never justify, never reason.
You've got much to think about. and it might be...
[the fast part again.]

"Farewell Transmission"  Jason Molina

(Glen Hansard's cover is excellent as well).
Decided to pull out an oldie but goodie..
