Tube Amps For Vandersteen 5a's? How Much Power Is Really Needed?

I just made a deal for a mint condition pair of these. I've long wanted a really good pair of Vandersteens but didn't have the budget to play in that space. I've read a number of discussions here, and otherwise, talking about this, though they were somewhat older. Despite the fact that the low end in these speakers is internally amplified, and one would think even SET amps, or certainly just about any good push pull tube amp would power these superbly, people generally seem to be throwing a LOT of power at them. Am I missing something?

Any input, expertise, or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

should not be that much, as you are only driving the uppers...

i would think 50-60-75 good wpc would be enough

i recall many years back hearing the 5a’s when they were introduced in the vegas ces -- lovely lovely sound, effortless yet without a hint of strain

Quicksilver V4 mono blocks worked great for my original Model 5's. ( I never upgraded to the 5A's) At the time the V4's put out 120WPC with the KT90 tubes I was using.

You might want to touch base with JohnnyR (audio connection). He has a lot of experience with Vandersteen speakers. Good Luck!
