You are right... that is what it felt like. It was sloppy, then flipped very solidly. I never thought of that. 

When I bought my Threshold s/500 in 1979 (?) the switch was always pretty sloppy. But it worked for fifteen year. Not surprising some may have failed.

Given the age of that unit, I recommend you have it fully restored. I sold my Threshold S/500 about 20 years ago and it was restored before resale… and the performance difference was remarkable.
