thoughts on adding phonostage

**originally posted in amp/preamp, suggested i post here***

Thinking of adding a phonostage/upgrade cartridge on current set up;
EAT b sharp turntable
rogue audio cronus magnum iii
goldenear T66 floor speakers
KimberKable ascent 8tc speaker wire and PBJ interconnect.

currently I have a ortofon bronze 2M cartridge.   will upgrade to EAT jo no.5 , Hana ML or ortofon MC quintent bronze depending on best price etc. excited to actually hear the difference as i think the set up sounds pretty good right now.

question is, thoughts on phonostage? the cronus magnum iii has a built in MM/MC phonostage, woudl it be overkill? and do i pair the phono to the rogue audio, or to the EAT turntable, or can I go with another brand?

@pmzn

Are you asking whether the cartridges you’re considering might be overkill for the Cronus’ internal phono? There’s no simple yes-or-no answer — the built-in stage can be surprisingly good for the money, but depending on the cartridge, it could also become the bottleneck in your system.

As far installation, the outboard phono stage connects between your turntable and the integrated. In this setup, you’d be bypassing the internal phono section of the Cronus, so all of the amplification and EQ duties will be handled by the dedicated external phono stage.

My recommendation, speak to Rogue Audio about auditioning their Ares II or Ares II Magnum. Synergy and improvement in sound (if any) should be much easier to realize with Ares than driving yourself crazy with plethora of options available in phono preamps.

In the end, it really comes down to how much effort you’re willing to put into auditioning phono stages, and ultimately finding the one that feels truly worthwhile — both in terms of the improvements it brings and the money spent.

The best phono stage I could recommend would be to find a preowned ASR Basic Exclusive. You would have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to better it.

Thank you for replies.  My original question was if adding an external phono to my amp which already had an existing one would be over kill.  Quickly learned obviously not.  I do intend to look at a rogue phono.  I like the idea of possibly auditioning one.  As of this post I also like the idea of introducing a solid state phono to my chain and listening to that as well.

You  have a solid state phono in that Rogue. If you want to add a phono stage you should try a tube phono stage!

Yogiboy agree, I think I will upgrade your speaker cables first then phonostage and cart.
