I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model? Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!
while in Florida, take every chance to visit as many dealers/retailers as possible on your trip. Take listening notes on the dealers/retailers that you do visit. I am interested in your future findings.
Well i should get my Ypsilon home demo by end of february just before i travel to Florida for business. The distributor has delayed the demo because he didn't receive the linestage yet. I'm also looking at Nagra at the moment.
I have read about stories like yours- saffron_boots
Sadly, some of you guys got bought lemons for sure. I still use an Elite 59-AVi for DVD duty and it is outstanding! I only wished it played blu-rays.
I hold the film/movie companies responsible, as most discs, having too many codec(s) therefore making the player companies (like Sony ES and Pioneer Elite) constantly developing software/firmware updates.
There were major problems with disc transport failure, which many owners had to replace. I replaced it, the motherboard, flash memory, and the power supply within the first year. I think the only original part left was the chassis.
Yes I sold the BDP-09 last year. Pioneer stopped updating the firmware to support newer Blu-ray authoring schemes. I felt it was sonically and visually superior to the Oppo but the load times and sketchy BD-Live support made the parting, amicable.
Cables: Mostly Kimber Hero interconnects and 8TC speaker wire. Couple of pairs of Monster M1000 MK I interconnects.
Doing house work today - started off with Coldplay in background and wanted to hear some horns so switched over to Chicago. Now I stopped house work! Wondering what you guys listen to? I am a big Dave Matthews fan myself although I have been listening to Eva Cassidy a lot lately.
First heard Thiel in the very early 90's. Maybe 1992 or even 91. I didn't purchase my used CS2 2 until 10 years later. (Going through a divorce and raising two children does funny things to you wallet.) Never forgot them though, so when opportunity struck...I later bought a back-up pair since I worried about replacement parts. I doubt if I will ever replace what I have now - Thiel legacy series is where my journey ends speaker-wise. Guess I will play with the electronics!
what year did you discover Thiel speakers? For me, it was 2012. Yes, I had B&W 805 speakers back in the 2000's. Fine speaker for a standmount monitor.
Back in the 80's, late 80's to be sure, all I could afford was mid-fi Sony. Even that Yamaha stack was out of reach. No complaints though- the Sony gear got me from 1988 to 2003.
In 1986 I'm afraid I could only afford a receiver and no separates. I do remember at that time I had a set of Phase Research speakers (Phil Clements) that I was smitten with....I had not heard Thiel yet since no dealers nearby. There were Audio Stores everywhere - ! My best buddy Ron was also an audio fan and we made many, many trips out of state just to listen to brands not in our area. Come to think of it, he was with me the first time I heard Thiel. He was not as smitten with them as I was and ended up with B&W. Dahlquist was on my short list until I heard Thiel. Good memories.....
is the year that I had a personal discovery in better Audio via a Yamaha stack at the local mall stereo store (remember those?). I wish that I could recall the speakers and cabling used ?
I'd like to add my vintage Thiel CS 2's to this conversation. :) Bought these babies in 1986. They still bring the luscious, warm, clean sound...Very easy to listen to for hours at a time. Run them with mid-fi components: Hafler 9180, Philips CD 80 and Rotel pre-amp. Smitten for 31 years........
My Dan D'Agostino Point 3 satellite/sub system has to give way to these towers.
@robinbarbour Have you considered changes in temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure affecting the sound waves? It's measurable and audible. Could be that simple.
living in the vicinity of one of our major U.S. cities, you and others will certainly experience this phenomenon. Airports are to cite and blame as well due to radar / signal blocking capabilities and daily operating RF/EMI functions. Another consideration is living in a certain radius of Military bases/depots/annexes.
Otherwise, radiation, is a prime culprit- computers, hard phone lines, cable lines, cell phones, smart phones, satellite phones...etc.
Here you go, Janfant. It was a long weekend so I took pictures and posted my system. It's not much compared to what most contributors have built but I'm ok with it. I also did a panoramic shot with my iPhone to give everyone an idea how large the living area is that I'm trying to fill.
Tough to tell from those photos, but seem good condition and price. I could really use another MCS1, but do not purchase from Craigslist. If you are thinking of purchasing the package, i would be interested in the MCS1 after checking photos... :)
We hew had a great day of music listening. Attended the Dallas Symphony for a great Beethoven's 8th and a Straus Horn concerto featuring our first horn as soloist before leaving to assume first horn of the Berlin Philharmonic. When we arrived home, CDs 5 and 6 were still playing on the McIntosh 7008, Duke Ellington at the Newport Jazz Festival. My wife remarked that Ellington's music was so sweet, it was like listening to Aaron Neville; kind of makes you want to smile or cry. I reminded her that I had told her of reviews (albeit for the 5 series, not the 2.4s) that said Thiels could make you cry. After the second Ellington CD, it switched to the single slot in which I had placed Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". Certainly an eclectic mix, but my wife, after making the astute analogy of wonderful jazz and sweet voices made the remark that the Thiels make our whole music collection sound almost like being at a live performance, enhancing any kind of good music. Janfant's "Happy Listening" remark made me feel I should share that we were doing just that. It's not just any speakers that will thrill you after coming home from a world class performance in as great a concert hall as we have here in the Meyerson.
Dave i also bought mine 1 year old used. I have been told it is as good as the HD25 so not worth spending more. Hegel is really a surprising brand. Did you get a Tidal yearly membership ? Let me know when you start using Tidal how it goes.
