Rower, At some instances, the highs from the Confidence series reminded me of Thiel's. Both are exceptional speakers.
Wadav, The S25 are indeed out of production, only a few pairs left from some of the dealers if I'm not mistaken. Give the mfgtr a call. |
To Buff, and off topic question. Are the Special 25s out of production now? |
OK, it's 09/18/2011 but...I auditioned BOTH of these products. The C4 is in a different spectrum than the 3.7. Yes, the 3.7 is good (I like the 3.7) but it is not a full size imaging speaker, doesn't go nearly as low, has no SLAM to music that calls for it, and the basic sonic signature isn't as life like and blended in texture as the C4.
If I added a sub to the 3.7, the overall price exceeds the C4, and ISTILL don't get slam when needed, the transparent texture of the C4, or the tightly integradted bass and life size sound stage. So, the C4 remaind superior overall. But, the 3.7 is killer at low SPL's and in the price range it lives in "as is" if some bass extension and image size is not important.
If someone took my Vandersteen Quatro signature woods away and said get another speaker at 10K or so, I'd head to the 3.7. But, If I COMPARED the 3.7 and the C4, I'll head to the C4.
The Vandersteen Quatro wood and the 3.7 is a tough call for most people. It could go either way and I'd understand either direction 100%. But not the C4 compared to EITHER the woods or the 3.7. The C4 wins hands down (got some BIG bucks, though?).
As far as driving the speakers, SS high curreny amps are pretty common now-a-days. So unless you listen crazy loud, I don't see that the comment about driving ANY of these speakers to be a "modern" SS issue. Sonic texture differences in amps when combined with speaker cables and the speakers? Sure. To each theeir own on that, but driving the speaker? No problem. |
Bjbcab,
I didn't mean that. For sound quality wise, Dynaudio Evidence Temptation is definitely superior to 3.7. However, I prefer 3.7's performance in term of Jazz music. That's just my personal preference. I am pretty sure that 3.7 is a lot easier to drive than Evidence Temptation. |
Toetapfactor,
In the Thiel vs. Wilson Sasha thread that Actuary616 started. The post was on 8/4/2010. |
You stated that you have listened to Evidence and temptation and like the Thiel better.
I missed that, where did he state that?..and if he did there is simply no helping this guy |
I really don't understand how you can compare C4 to Thiel 3.7 when you have not auditioned. You are going to give your friend a comparison for purpose of making a purchase based on what strangers are telling you? You stated that you have listened to Evidence and temptation and like the Thiel better. Evidence and Temptation are arguably better than the C4 so why not give your friend the comparison on based on this experience? Better yet just tell your friend to go listen to the C4 and make his own decision. |
Agree, room size is one of the important criteria in determining which speaker is appropriate for that room. with the right room size and proper speaker matching, that system should sound good. Everything else is a matter of preference. |
I can understand his questioning the Theils to be honest,I would rather have Dyns or Wilson any day and pass at the 3.7s, even if cheap. |
Vernneal,
I am very happy with Thiel 3.7. They are hard to beat at its price. |
If you question the Thiels then you must not be satisfied, sell em to me cheap and get the bew Wilsons and be done with in |
Certainly each room and each system will be different. I was speaking about my experience as a dealer with the lines as a whole using the other associated equipment which I use.
The higher end Dynaudio speakers such as the Confidence and up are very dependent upon the associated equipment.
In my opinion both Dynaudio and Thiel can be very involving when paired with the right associated gear.
Agreed that nothing beats an audition - consult your local dealer! |
In the end, nothing beats an audition on both of these fine speakers. |
I don't think Dynaudio "Romantic" either. I used to audition Evicence Temptation in an exotic system: Accupahse power source+DCS Paganini+BAT REX+Electrocompaniet NEMO. The sound is excellent, but I don't think it's very involving. On contrary, I think 3.7s are quite musical and involving. |
"To give a general rule of thumb though when comparing the two the Dynaudio house sound is more romantic and makes everything sound good. Thiel's generally have a more detailed presentation and give you EXACTLY what is on the cd. Thiel speakers also excel at low frequency extension in their floorstanding models"
IMO, I really have to disgaree with that totally,Ive never heard anyone call Dynaudio "romantic" or forgiving to a recording especially a dealer of Dyns.Ive heard the Theils and would swap that comparision 180 degrees. |
Hi Actuary616,
Preference is greatly dependant upon price point. Both Thiel and Dynaudio are great companies who produce very nice products.
The Dynaudio Excite X-12 @ $1200 retail is a great speaker. Thiel's SCS-4 @ $2K is very hard to beat.
I have owned systems in which I altered the Thiel CD-2.4 and Dynaudio Contour S3.4 and the speaker I enjoyed more depended upon the electronics upstream.
To give a general rule of thumb though when comparing the two the Dynaudio house sound is more romantic and makes everything sound good. Thiel's generally have a more detailed presentation and give you EXACTLY what is on the cd. Thiel speakers also excel at low frequency extension in their floorstanding models.
So the direct answer to your question is that my personal preference is dependant upon price. |
Buff,
As a dealer of both Dynaudio and Thiel, which one do you prefer? Can you give us some comments? Thanks. |
Audiofeil is correct, I am a Dynaudio dealer, and Sapphire owner, but since I was not at the time trying to sell the OP anything, simply offering information which as others pointed out IS relevant to the OPs question I did not see the reason to add some kind of disclosure statement. Additionally, anyone who clicks on my username will see that I am a dealer of both Dynaudio AND Thiel. I most certainly was not trying to hid the fact that I am a dealer, I was just trying to offer useful insight based on my experience as a dealer to the OP. BUT, since the OP was so kind as to point out the fact that I AM a Dynaudio dealer, pelase let me know if any of you need anything. |
Buff is a Dynaudio dealer and should have tempered his post with that disclosure. |
Bjbcab,
Not really. I need some comparison between 3.7 and C4. Thanks. |
You really need validation that you have the best "reasonably" priced speakers don't you. Congrats on your system and just enjoy. |
IMO, I agree with both of you..The C2 lacks alot in a speaker and im guessing most would either buy the C1s and add a sub or spend more for the C4s.The Sapphire is where you should look if comparing speakers in the same price range, and my vote goes to Dynaudio. |
The Dynaudio Sapphire should likely also be entered into this conversation, as it is closer in price to the 3.7. |
I used to listen to C2. I think 3.7 is definitely superior to C2. I think 3.7 is comparable to any speakers below 20K. But I have never heard C4. Can you please share your impression about it? Thanks. |
