The New Synergistic Research Purple Fuses

This thread is intended for those who are actually using the new SR Purple Fuses. In my system, they are a significant improvement over the SR Orange fuses. What are your impressions?

just upgraded from all orange to all purple and I am absolutely thrilled and actually rather gobsmacked at the leap in clarity and detail etc

How many components did you put them in?  Which ones?  Did you put them all in at the same time?  Did you put them in the same way?  Were you able to distinguish whether you put them in the right direction?  If you put them in one component at the time, did you hear a sound improvement with each component?

I am still troubled by directionality for multiple reasons ---I am functionally blind and my components are in a space where I can't get o them easily.  I have had all of your fuses except Purple.  I am considering Purple.  I have the QSA yellow now.  If I buy 4-5 Purples, does it make sense to initially place them into your component as follows:  if the ground is on the bottom the writing on the fuse would read L-R?  if the ground is on the top, the writing on the SR fuse should read R-L?  Or does the ground even matter?

For those of you who recently put in the Purple fuse, how did you put them in?  Did you put the fuse in with the writing left to right?  Did you have to change the fuse after listening because you thought it was in the wrong way.  Did it vary by component?

My manufacturer told me either 3.0 or 3.15 will work without any problem in his system.

@audiosense.... What fuse are you comparing?  Orange to Purple?  QSA to SR?

I am looking for people who have compared the SR purple to the QSA yellow.

Which fuse should I buy? I'll order it tonight, put it in and report back in a few weeks. We do lots of blind test but this one will take a bit more planning because the amp will have to be opened up.

You should buy SR purple and the QSA yellow.  I would love to hear your views.

@jwmazur

Interesting post.  I now have a collection of SR fuses that are worthless.  I guess they go to my fuse grave.  I understand technology but I can not be switching fuses every 18 months.  That is one of the reasons I like QSA.

So here is a question....if you have multiple different fuses in your system, how do you know which one is really making the impact on your sound?   Let me give you an example.  I have an SR orange in my Music Server, and my DAC and my mono amps and pre-amp.  I went to QSA yellow one component at a time.  After changing the source which was my Lampi Pacific, I did not hear any change.  After a couple of weeks, I added it to the Pre-amp.  Again not much of a change.  I finally added to the monoblocks.  Once I had the same fuse in all of my components did I hear a noticeable difference.

Based on my experience, I would find it hard to believe, that if you only placed an upgraded fuse in only one component, you would hear a difference.  Now I am also of the opinion that upgraded fuses will help lower-end systems more than high end systems but that is another debate.

Thoughts?

Here is my beef with SR fuses.  QSA has a directional arrow and directions for which way they go.  SR does not.  My components are not easily accessible.  I have 5 components that they go into.  I have to try one component at a time to see what I hear.  Oh wait there is a long break in period so how do I know if they sound bad?  Then I add another component.  This process could take a month.  I can't put them all in at the same time.

C'mon SR figure out the proper direction.  QSA did.  You can too.

Ted

I kind of assumed the writing was the direction of the fuse but not guaranteed.  Question, does it matter if your ground plug is on top or the bottom of the plug?

@papafrgog  --you bring up great points that I have questioned in the past to no avail.  It is interesting that when a new model comes out, the brand always tells you what has changed. ie better capacitors, resistors, wiring etc. It would be nice to know what is different about the purple or for that matter, what is the difference between a QSA Blue and Yellow.

I have a very high-end system with all high-end accessories/tweaks.  At some point, there is a law of diminishing returns.  So in my system, when I just added one fuse to my Lampizator Pacific, I really did not hear a notable difference.  I will give you another example.  Everyone raved about Townshend Audio Isolation Podiums.  I purchased them for over $3k and I certainly did not get the results everyone bragged about.  People proclaim every tweak matters. and that it is a cumulative effect.   Well, I guess it depends on each person's system.  Sometimes when you order a prime steak you don't put A-1 sauce on it.  You just enjoy the prime steak.

My point is or IMO, if you have a great system you are not going to realize an incremental improvement with every tweak imaginable.  I challenge those that disagree to go back and start over.  Remove every tweak and listen to your music.  Use that as your baseline.  I did that. Then start adding one tweak at a time.  See what really makes a difference.   As I said, I have every tweak there is...lol. Some have not worked; others have.  You might ask why am I continuing to add tweaks if my system is great.  Because we are always looking for that extra bump in sound.   In lower-end systems, I believe that tweaks can help more.  The biggest improvement in my system came when I added the Lucas Audio LDMS Music Server.  Better components DO matter

Tweaks that worked for me:  Upgraded fuses, PPT paste, and mats, 1260 contact enhancer, acoustic absorption panels. Tweaks that are less than satisfying -Schuman's Resonator's, Townshend Podiums, Amplifier isolation pods. The jury is still out on HFT's and I have 18 of them.

What's next?  I have had every SR fuse they have made and now QSA Yellow fuses.  I am still reading this thread for Purple reviews and WBF for QSA reviews.  I will contemplate trying one Purple or QSA red for my Lampi.  If I hear improvement I will keep otherwise for sure I will return.

Let the debate roll on!

@highstream ---it almost sounds like you still may not have them in the right directions.  That is my big complaint about SR.  If you have multiple fuses it is hard to discern which one in right and notright.  Trial by error....one fuse at a time.

@nutty. ---did you have any problems with fuse direction?  Which way did you put them in?  Did you have to change the direction?
