The Audio Science Review (ASR) approach to reviewing wines.

Imagine doing a wine review as follows - samples of wines are assessed by a reviewer who measures multiple variables including light transmission, specific gravity, residual sugar, salinity, boiling point etc.  These tests are repeated while playing test tones through the samples at different frequencies.

The results are compiled and the winner selected based on those measurements and the reviewer concludes that the other wines can't possibly be as good based on their measured results.

At no point does the reviewer assess the bouquet of the wine nor taste it.  He relies on the science of measured results and not the decidedly unscientific subjective experience of smell and taste.

That is the ASR approach to audio - drinking Kool Aid, not wine.

A good friend of mine is a winemaker of some renown. I've been following his efforts since he started out, I've helped with winemaking many times, we had numerous conversations about the fine points of the craft during which I learned an awful lot and, of course, I freely offered my unbiased feedback based on consuming vast amounts of the product. I'm a helpful guy.

To make a long story short, winemaking is science-driven to an extent that truly surprised me back then. A good winemaker, or brewer, or distiller for that matter, is in large part a chemist and on the ground level, the incremental experimenting, documentation and chain of custody are straight out of science 101.

OP should familiarize himself with enologists and what they do.

ASR has value. Audiogon has value. Other venues and publications have value too. The more points of view - and data points - we have, the more empowered we are to make choices. Which, ultimately, are for us to make.

they are most likely steering newer audiophiles down the measurement rabbit hole, when they don’t even have a clue yet what type of speakers and equipment they personally enjoy.

True, but... on ASR, a good DAC costs $200 whereas on Audiogon you might be made to feel like an ignorant peasant if you haven’t "invested" $1000 in a USB cable.

Then folks wonder why younger people are flocking to ASR

@audition__audio

A couple years back, Amir was said to have Mark Levinson monoblocks driving Revel Salon 2s in his personal system.

I haven't seen a picture so I can't comment on positioning etc.

But I wouldn't be ashamed to have that gear in my house :)

Australia’s top drop is around $1,000 a bottle and we get peeved when others, flaunting their affluence, mix it with coke.  When it won a prestigious French competition, it was disqualified because it was so good, it just had to be French (in the minds of the judges).

@richardbrand that's a cute story. Are you making that up? 🤔

Erin has stated he cannot hear a difference between amplifiers, does not mean there’s no difference.

@samureyex

Only an imbecile would state that they cannot hear a difference between amplifiers, and Erin is not an imbecile. It is therefore doubtful that Erin actually said that, unless of course you can provide a link. Thanks

One thing everyone can agree on about ASR is that they should really ditch the panther. Odd that they haven't been sued.

@texbychoice

Now that’s a load of unsubstantiated BS - heavy on innuendo and MIA on facts.

Mostly you sound angry and butthurt. It’s almost as if Amir had disparaged one of your products or something

Amir himself automated a search process for mention of ASR in other forums so he could jump in to defend himself.

Amir had been conspicuously absent from this thread, so his nefarious "search process" doesn’t work very well.

... Unless he is trolling this forum under a fake identity. But honestly what kind of creep would do that?

Hahaha links to all these facts please?

Amir jumped a thread here and went on and on and on posting numerous charts, graphs, and long verbiage. Amir himself mentioned the search algorithm.  Fact.

There is a video of Amir asking AP engineer to make the analyzer more "fool proof".  Fact.

Amir himself documents his personal system and talks about cost.  Fact.

Transparency about Amir's other business comes up in defense of his claimed absolute and unquestionable impartiality.  Fact.

In fairness, when Amir got to sit in Mike's listening chair he changed his tune and said he liked the system. This suggests those speakers are quite directional.

First, here is this recent Audiogon thread about uber-Audiophile Mike Lavigne’s lavish audio barn

Then, here is audio infidel Amir’s scandalous visit to Mike’s barn. Six-figure-system man visits seven-figure-system man!

Mild snark aside, it went better than you’d think. And the ASR peanut gallery was a lot less foaming-at-the-mouth than expected.

Goes to show that things don’t have to be so black and white in this world.

Next up on the evening news: Republican has dinner at Democrat’s home!! Yeah I know I’m one day late with that one
