Tannoy Stirlings on the way!

Hi, everybody.  Longtime member, first time caller.

I just ordered up a pair of Tannoy Stirling GR floorstanders, and, frankly, I'm looking for people to rejoice with!

I'm a speakers guy, through and through.  I've got Dynaudios, Focals, B&Ws, Totems, Wharfedales, Klipsches, and even my old Polk 5Bs, the first speakers I ever bought, way back in the '80s.  I wanted to try something very different, and the Prestige line Tannoys really spoke to me.  The coincident drivers, the old-school-ish paper cone, the old-school cabinets and ports.  I'm really looking forward to hearing how they soundstage!

I thought about getting the Turnberrys, but the Stirlings should be just about the perfect size for my [extremely irregular] room.  Especially since I already have a pair of subs.

I'm pretty chuffed.

“These definitely won’t be my last speakers. :) I’m too much of a speaker slut. That doesn’t mean I won’t keep them in the collection forever, though. We’ll see about that.”

@trentmemphis,

As you said, it’s a adventure! I don’t know if anything is ‘forever’ in this crazy hobby, but I do see myself living with my Tannoy Canterbury’s for a very long time. Once they are in your possession, you may realize that they are built to very high standards and worth every penny to hoard them in your permanent collection :-)

Congratulations on your purchase. You’re going to love these speakers....that dual Concentric driver is very special, get ready for some long listening sessions!
@bond-san,

Much of the specification is the same as that of the Stirling, however the Turnberry features a more substantial, taller cabinet with larger internal volume. So you’re likely to hear a slightly better bass response. Turnberry’s are also 2db more efficient. You can’t go wrong with any of the speakers in Prestige series.

Whichever you decide on, they can be easily your last speaker purchase. I won’t trade my Canterbury’s for anything out there!
“It baffles me why Tannoys are not reviewed by the high-end mags.”

I am only guessing here...maybe due to lack of initiative on distributor part to have Tannoy reviewed by TAS/Stereophile or end users prefers modern finishes instead of traditional wood cabinetry / appearance. I know they are extremely popular in South Asian markets.

You were also spot on feeding the Tannoy with atleast 30 plus watts of class A power. That’s what I am using with my Canterbury’s.

@mulveling

LOL! I was just thinking the same and hoping to score a deal on Westminster Royal GR’s. The Canterbury’s wouldn’t be a bad idea for second system :-)

@mulveling

Thanks for your recommendation. I was running low on my usual Howard CS4014 Citrus Shield Paste Wax (Walnut). I am going to try the Liberon next. I also recommend buying CLARK'S Oil & Wax Large Block Applicator. I am in 4th year of Canterbury’s ownership and the wood grain never looked so exquisite.

“The Stirlings are rated 91, which in my room should make the Zen sufficient on the wattage front.”

I would not recommend any amp with <30watts in pure class A. Bring in the Zen, you’ve got MC152 on hand for comparison. No doubt you would appreciate tube’s rich harmonics and intoxicating mid-range through Stirling’s but you may crave for more power in the low end region.

It’s a journey you will figure it out :-)
“Why stop there? Westminsters for everybody!”

@trentmemphis,

Westminster are beasts! I can only imagine the incredible soundstage. For my room, Canterbury’s are perfect. If this is going to be your first experience with a single driver, make sure you play with front feet adjustments to give you that required ‘tilt’. Depending on the height of your listening chair, the height of the mid-section of the Dual Concentric driver should be at your ear level. I was able to obtain better treble tonality and imaging with a slight upward tilt. If you want dead center pin-point imaging, toe-in your Stirlings.

Where is your electronics rack? It was my observation that placing equipment rack beyond 22” height in the middle of speakers ‘interfered’ with imaging and messed with my illusion of DK playing in my room with her piano :-)
“I was sitting here thinking, "I wish my thread was getting as much discussion as that Tekton Design Moab thread."

Then I read a few pages of it. I prefer silence.”

That would be my advise as well 😊

Any update on your delivery date?

“that response was not directed at you, should have been more clear. The quote was from someone further back in this series of posts that said to stay away from class A of 30 watts or more....which to me has no validity...”

@audioguy85,

I think you have mis-read my post. I have suggested OP as below,

I would not recommend any amp with <30watts in pure class A
“The eagle has landed!“

Awesome, take your sweet time to set them up.  If you’re placing them away from wall, be sure to experiment with VDPS 😊
@trentmemphis,

Is the finish appears dry out of the box? I end up polishing my Canterbury’s after 6 months of ownership. Buy this applicator for smooth and even finish,

^^^Glad to hear you you were able to sort out the REL connectivity.
+1, GIK Acoustics. There is about 2 months wait but they will be well worth the wait. I am expecting my Tape Op Collaboration Art Panels by end of this months.
@trentmemphis,

Please reach out to Arnold at Core Audio Designs. He will make you stands that you will cherish for remainder of your lifetime. My room showcase several pieces of his master craftsmanship.
@trentmemphis,

That’s great, glad to hear you’re enjoying your Tannoy’s. As a fellow Tannoy owner, I am not all surprised by your experience, I absolutely love my Canterbury’s.
Congratulations @mesch. They are certainly well engineered and exquisitely designed. As time goes on, that gorgeous wood and finish are going to look richer (and darker) after each waxing.

As with any electronics, careful matching is very important. May I know what preamp or amp you will be pairing your Stirlings with?

@trentmemphis

I am over the moon with Accuphase E-650 Integrated (Class A - 30W) powering my Canterbury’s. I also auditioned the darTZeel CTH-8550 and T+A PA 3100 HV (both integrated) in my system but end up preferring the E-650.

“Accuphase kit interests me, but I've never heard any of it.  From what I've read/heard people say, it seems like they have an atypical class-A sound; cooler, flatter, a bit recessed by comparison“

@trentmemphis

Accuphase sounds nothing like your generalization of a component you never heard. I can only speak to E-650 Integrated that I’ve come to treasure over past 2 plus years. To my ears, it has a slightly warm (SET like) sound that is smooth yet suave with unfatiguing tonality.

The E-650 liquidity with vocals in also unmistakable. I could easily pick out the dense texture and richness of vocal harmonies on one hand and its resolution and transparency on the other. The voices blends beautifully with arrangements without congealing; the rendering of space is exemplary not just in width and depth but more importantly in the precise placement of images within the soundstage. Notably, instruments are presented as individual objects spatially and texturally, making it easy to clearly hear individual parts within the whole. That’s one quality that a meticulously designed component does well; to hear it to this degree from an integrated amplifier is quite astonishing and rewarding. Once you hear the E-650 textural beauty, resolution and liquidity, it becomes very hard to walk away :-)

Good luck with your journey!

@trentmemphis

It’s all good. I just want you to make an informed decision based on actual user experience. I realize no two systems are alike but you and I share speakers that are cut from same cloth and I want you to enjoy Stirling’s to the max. They are very special speakers, the kind you hang on to rest of life, I know my Canterbury’s are not going anywhere :-)

@trentmemphis,

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the Tannoy’s. I have been enjoying my Canterbury’s with Accuphase E-650 Integrated for almost 2 years now. Thanks to my dealer, I am going to audition darTZeel Integrated in a month or so….looking forward to this amazing opportunity :-)

@bobelton

IME, when I tried GAIA’s footers with carpet spikes on my Canterbury’s they further soften the bass. I had much better outcome with edenSound Bearpaw Sr (M8 thread size). Tighter base and improved soundstage. Reach out to Dan at edenSound, he is very knowledgeable and helpful!

PS: I have carpeted floors.

@trentmemphis

I hope flooding didn’t cause much emotional and financial damage. Good luck with settling in your place!
