Tannoy or Volti

I have a friend who has the Tannoy Prestige GRF 90 for sale he is moving out of the country for half price, he paid $29000 in around 2020 not made in China. I am upgrading my Forte IVs, I am also considering the Volti audio Lucera…anyone that has heard the Tannoy and any other suggestions which will be better would be appreciated….I have a few first watt amps and several tube amps…plus Jeff Rowland and Pass Labs amps..

The O/baby is new so I haven’t demoed, but this Stereophile here says Sonics is similar house sound.

The Devore O/96 dealer believes that while the O/93 sounds great very good, the O/96 is significantly sonically better in which I agree.  Likely the same O/96 vs O/baby.  So no, the O/baby may not be good enough to understand the O/96 Sonics, but it may be good enough to hear the Devore Orangutan house sound and if you like then track down a O/96 to demo

Side note- in addition to my high powered speakers, I’m also using the 100 Volti Rival to discover tube amp magic including flea watt amps down to 2wpc.  As the Volti is clear/neutral, I’d like to get a pair of the musical O/96s.  Then I can try tube amps on both - what fun!  Unfortunately, I don’t have the storage space …yet

Using Constellation Inspiration Stereo on my Vimberg MinoD, Coincident M300B Frankenstein MK II for my Volti Rival.

hard rock, classic rock heavy metal didn’t sound good too ear piercing

Early hard rock and metal recordings often prioritized loudness and power over sonic clarity, using techniques like heavy compression and limiting to achieve a "wall of sound" effect vs fidelity.  As Volti is like an efficient clear window, I’m not surprised at your shrill findings.  Horns strength is their high efficiency, sonic ease , and midrange fidelity which mates well to midrange focused tube amplification.

I disagree that Volti is merely a lateral move- I believe that they are sonically superior to Klipsch and less colored as I have demoed both at several audio shows.  Volti designs their speakers to compete/beat Klipsch offerings.  I own the Volti Rival.

Volti vs Tannoy is primarily a subjective preference - best to demo yourself as we cannot tell you what you’d prefer.

I hate to say it but the Volti speaker was amazing, it’s like the other speaker had a mask on when playing music compared to the Volti Razz…the midrange in the Razz was crazy good, detailed not bright or harsh in anyway,….

Like a clear window into the music.  Great that you got to hear the differences for yourself vs Klipsch

very musical and took me to a place that consumed me emotionally

Fantastic - finding gear that subjectively resonates with you is the holy grail.  Volti gives a clear window of upline electronics.

Unlike the very limited selection of horn type speakers. Tannoy uses unique dual concentric driver design which will sound significantly different than Volti- best to demo if still interested.  To me, Fyne Audio (ex-Tannoy engineers) seems newer/better tech/sonics - the Fyne Audio F704SP sounded great at AXPONA 2025, Tannoy Sonics never resonated with me.

Not 100% sold on Volti might be to close to the Klipsch sound I am trying to get away from…

From your demo, you’ve discovered they sound different.  Likewise, the Devore O/96 will sound different than your AN-E.  Best to demo yourself.

@charles007100 - are you also considering non-horn efficient speakers?  If so, maybe consider Coherent Audio or Charney.
