Tang Band drivers made of wood?

Evening Goners,

Trying to find someone/s who can explain to me the reasons why a manufacturer would use a "wood driver and/or pole plug" as a driver in they're speakers?

I do not have any knowledge of these so anything will hopefully be helpful!
