suggestions for speakers

You can buy a used Totwm Hawk speaker under $1.5K. This speaker is seamless, images well, good bass, and very musical. The Hawk is not too big and is attractive (comes in Mahogany, Cherry, Black, Maple, White) with a high WAF (wife acceptance factor). It will be very difficult to find a better speaker for the price.

A line I have seen alot of lately is the Buggtussel line. I just found out they are not that far from me, anybody say road trip :) Anyway they have a speaker called the Cingulate, I belive it is close to your price range. Check it out at their website www.buggtussel.com

I bought a used pair of Proac 1.5's that have a pretty high WAF. They are 39" tall and only about 9 inches wide. They come in multiple veneers and are great sounding and about as good looking as speakers get. They won't give you the ultimate bass, but they are very very nice... Retail is about 3k, but you can find them here on Agon for about half that. Good luck. Phil

thanks every body for their input. I don't have where to listen to proacs or meadowowlarks...Would you buy without? What do you think about b&w-like 805 nautilus compared to above suggestions? [ I have a b&w dealer around]

If you are considering B&W N805's, take a listen to the Revel Performa M20. I was about to purchase the N804-N805 combo for my HT system. Than I had a friend tell me to take a listen to the Revs and I was hooked. I started w/the M20, had them as my L&R fronts. Then I added the F30's, I now use the M20's as my rears and I've been very happy. For you the M20 would be perfect. Although they are not as efficiant as the N805's, they are very detailed w/a good broad soundstage and the bass is incredible from a speaker of this size. The rosewood finish is what convinced my wife she could live w/them. They've had this speaker on the 'gon for about the same price as a used set of N805's. One thing, the stands are a must. They really help focus the sound considerably. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. Happy hunting.....john

If speakers must be close to the wall then that almost always rules out a rear-ported speaker. I think the proacs fall into this category. Anyone who has suggested a rear-ported speaker should be asked to qualify this recommendation when the speakers are close to the rear wall, and what the minimum distance is.

Used Ls3/5 or new Spendor 3/5 is a speaker which works well close to the rear wall. Bass does not go very deep, but a spendor or Rel sub can be added later (placed out of sight) to make up for this.
