Speaking of phono, line preamp and driver tubes, how close a match do we want ?

12AX7, 12AU7 etc. tubes. Both between or among tubes and within each tube.

I understand, 7% or so match is considered fine, but for some reason I want a closer match. Am I wrong ?

Check with the manufacturer on that one. 7% can be easy to meet depending on the tube otherwise. This will matter a lot less if the circuit employs feedback.
