speaker placement

I am in the process of re-doing my 2 channel system. It will be located in a 16x14 area. This area opens up to an adjacent dining area about the same size. This area overlooks the dining area. This in effect doubles the size. I would like to put the speakers against the railing that seperates the two areas. I guess it would appear to the speakers like a near field setup. I am wondering if any one has done this and any ideas of what type of speakers would work in this environment.
