That would be so cool… never heard that. Well, I bought some really ugly, inexpensive speakers that out performed others… but not in the same lineup.
For instance, I bought some Apogee Slant 8’s. My feeling was they performed at two or three times the cost of other speakers. But, within the Apogee line they performed better than the Slant 6 and less than the baby grand… or whatever the next level was.
It depends on where you are in the spectrum of speakers. But when you get to a certain point, in general, companies position their products by sound quality and it is a pretty safe bet that if you have done your research about top brands in a category, the more you pay the better sound you get. So, you have to align yourself with the sound you want… and eliminate poor performers, then the rule of thumb holds.
