The Sony CDP XA1ES was well reviewed by Stereophile. I owned the XA1ES for awhile and while it sounded good, I always had trouble with the disc loading mechanism and just gave up on the player.

And yes, I know you asked about the XA2ES.

Keep in mind that it is an almost 20 year old player, so maintenance to the laser and other parts is probably not too far away. I would first check out if spare parts are readily available.

What price are they asking? If we talking $30 or so, it is that much of a commitment.

I own one, now in my second system, a surround system, where it doesn't get much use.  The drawer works fine.  One weird thing is that it cuts off the first two seconds of every disc; I actually have to rewind it after it starts if I want to hear those seconds.
Newer players have more sophisticated days, so I wouldn't pull the trigger unless you want to use it as a transport only or if you are getting a great bargain.  I would describe it as a polite sounding player
