Sinatra was a fabulous musician and your observation is exactly right. Musicians he worked with always had tremendous respect for him. If you don’t have the classic “Sinatra at the Sands” (Reprise) with the Basie orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones it is a must hear. As expected the Basie band sounds fabulous and no problem with balance. The Capitol releases are also some of his best work and with great SQ.
Sinatra Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra on Impex vinyl
I listened to the new reissue by Impex records of Sinatra Sing and Dance last night. For those who are considering this album as big Sinatra fans, or for those who just want a taste of Sinatra's vocal abilities, this album really delivers.
Yet, while the album spot lights beautifully Sinatra's voice, the backing band is a little veiled and undynamic sounding. ( which is mentioned in the liner notes). With this caveat, I think the new Impex release should be in everyone's library, particularly if they are a fan of male vocals ( the out-takes on side 2 are extraordinary, Frank must have had a superior ear as his suggestions to the band are spot-on!) . Anyone else have an opinion of this release? Are there other new release options for Sinatra with both great vocals..and instrumental SQ?

This Sinatra fan regularly listens to what I believe is an original issue Sinatra at the Sands double LP set. And yeah, it sounds excellent...even if slightly-over-the-edge audiophiles would be upset that Frank clearly has a mike in his hand. I'm also pretty sure my parents actually went to one of the performances. Or was the story they told me that they tried to wangle tickets but were put off by the price? |
Don’t own or have heard it, but for whatever it may be worth a music friend does and he claims it is good, but he prefers the original. Very different; tipped up in the upper ranges and an unnatural “squeaky clean” (his words) overall sound compared to the original. Btw, I own both the stereo and mono versions of the original and the mono is also terrific and worth looking out for. I would have to say your friend’s opinion is not popular. I also have a friend who owns various copies, including the MoFi, he tells me the MoFi is far superior to all the others, including his originals. I have heard the same opinion from other folks as well. Thanks for the above link, but I would not be interested in a VG copy like the one you posted. |
