Another good performance is the St. Louis Symphony conducted by Slatkin on RCA.

On CD, not sure if it's still in print, but Rostropovich and the National Symphony on Teldec is an excellent version, probably my favorite. On vinyl, the Mercury recording with Skrowaczewski and the Minneapolis Symphony is pretty good, though perhaps on the bright side. On SACD, I have the Gergiev disc on the Phillips but haven't listened to it in a while, so I'll withhold recommending it till I do. On the whole, I have yet to find a recording that has the raw power and impact that you get at a live performance of this piece, but I don't think I ever will. |
