The Pacific Northwest Audio Society has been dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of fine music and electronics since its founding in 1978. Although the Society is based in the Seattle area, we serve the greater Pacific Northwest and draw enthusiasts from as far as Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. We meet each month for a new and exciting audio experience and our network includes many of the top experts in the Pacific Northwest and around the world.
We're a bunch of Audio enthusiasts with particular interest in "true to life" audio reproduction, who love to share our interests with each other: from our latest music or movie finds to the off-beat "look, I made a pair of speakers from a pair of tall-boys, plastic wrap and aluminum foil!"

(Seattle) Audio Society Meeting (Steve McCormack) Thur. March 8th The next meeting of the Pacific Northwest Audio Society will be with Steve McCormack, of SMC Audio, this Thursday, March 8th. Mark this into your calendar now. Many members still remember the magical evening of music we had more than two years ago when Steve McCormack presented his Virtual Reality Engine-1 preamp to the club and pretty much blew everyone away. By the end of the meeting, some members were proposing to spend entire treasury of the club to buy the VRE-1 from Steve! Good thing that cooler heads prevailed..... but we still long for that magical moment again. Our President, John Stone, would like to remind us (since he won't be at the meeting) that we still don't have enough in the club treasury to buy the new VRE-1C. Here's the chance. Steve is bringing his latest version, the VRE-1C for yet another presentation. This is the first time ever that a remote-controlled version of a preamp sounds better than the manual version using a stepped, discrete-resistor attenuator. Steve will tell us how he managed to do it at the Pacific Northwest Audio Society meeting, Thursday, March 8th. In case you don't know who Steve McCormack is, he was the founder of McCormack Audio (since sold to Conrad Johnson), recorded and engineered some of the most sought after Direct Disc LPs ever made with M&K Real Time, founded the Mod Squad, and invented the Tiptoes. Seattle-area Audiophiles...April 12th, 2012 - deHavilland Tubes, and Tapes all Night Join us in April to meet Kara Chaffee and see her fabulous line of deHavilland HiFi tube gear. The evening will feature her Model 50A, 45 watt, triode-wired KT88 output stage, mono block amplifiers. She'll pair this with her UltraVerve 3 preamplifier features 100% hand wired point-to-point circuitry. It features the 6SN7 octal tube, and tube rectification using the 5AW4 / 5U4 rectifier. To top it all off, Kara will also bring her Model 222 Vacuum Tube Magnetic Tape Playback Preamplifier, which we will pair with a reel-to-reel machine and reels from Bruce Brown's private stock at Puget Sound Studios. |

His Galibier Stelvio II turntable will serve as the foundation and the Executive Committee is working with Joel to assemble the rest of a cutting-edge system along with the most inspiring vinyl we can get our hands on. October 12th, 2012 - The Speaker Contestants Meet Zinfinity This month we have a very interesting combination. Our 2012 speaker contest winners and runners up will be bringing in their speakers for us to listen to. We'll play some of the judge’s selections from the contest. We also have Zsolt Mathe of Z-Infinity demonstrating his tube based preamp and amplifiers. We'll hear the Zinfinity amps through the club speakers as well as the speaker contest speakers. Zsolt Mathe, founder of Z-Infinity Audio has had an early passion for music and electronics. Growing up in Europe, he was educated in a music school while building his first electronic amplifiers at an age of 12. When he moved to the Pacific Northwest, he studied at University of Washington earning degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics and Math. When he established Z-Infinity Audio he wanted to bring the heritage of what he learned growing up in Europe – both from his music and engineering education. I just wanted to bring to the attention of Seattle and other Northwest audiophiles, and PNWAS members that the Seattle Wind Symphony plays a concert Saturday, 7 PM, February 23, 2013 at the Fist Free Methodist Church auditorium. The church is located on the North side of Queen Anne Hill. It is acoustically quite good and used by several groups for concerts and recording. The Seattle Wind Symphony is comprised of approx. 60 players, including a full complement of woodwinds, brass, percussion, string bass, harp and piano. Many are music teachers in the region, and about half of the personnel hold graduate degrees in music. I posted here as the band plays the same kind of literature as the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Cleveland Winds, etc., whose recordings are often treasured by audiophiles. This program includes "Incantation and Dance" by John Barnes Chance, "Suite of Old American Dances" by Robert Russell Bennett, "Enigma Variations" by Sir Edward Elgar, Percy Grainger's "Molly on the Shore", "Fantasia for Alto Saxophone" by Claude T. Smith and other pieces. [As done by Mercury and Telarc, the concerts are recorded using a minimalist miking/audiophile approach-three spaced omnidirectional microphones, (Neumann TLM 50) and a Nagra VI digital recorder at 96/24.] Hope you'll join us for the concert and support the SWS! April 11th, Thursday, at 7:30pm - First Sound Audio Don't miss our April meeting when we'll be joined by Emmanuel Go of First Sound Audio (Renton, WA), to demonstrate his fantastic line of handmade tube preamplifiers. Emmanuel is renowned for his attention to detail in his products and he'll discuss some of his philosophies and approaches to design and building. We'll have two Fist Sound models on hand as well as Emmanuel's Berning OTL (output-transformer-less) tube amplifier (and possibly a solid state amplifier), all connected to the club's Genesis 7.2 speakers. After the fantastic success of last year's "Live vs. Recorded" meeting we decided to make this an annual June event for the Audio Society. It's hard to beat the energy and excitement that goes along with a live performance and recording and playing back the performance is our way of putting our own audiophile spin on the evening. This year we have two musical artists you won't want to miss. We're fortunate to have partnered with the Seattle Opera to find soprano Kimberly Giordano. Kimberly appeared most recently at the Seattle Opera as Suor Osmina in Suor Angelica. She also joined the Seattle Mariners last summer on Safeco Field to perform the National Anthem. In addition, we have Seattle violin soloist Marie' Rossano. Marie has appeared as a soloist with the Seattle Symphony and is also the winner of the 2012 Classical KING FM Young Artist Award. She'll be performing at the Juliard School before our event and with the Salt Lake Symphony after. Phillip Chance, recording engineer for the Seattle Woodwind Symphony, will join us to record the performances of these two amazing women. This event is open to the public and the Audio Society will provide food and drinks.
