IIRC this is an idler drive and the motor is notorious for needing a warm-up before it goes to the right speed.
In addition, it lacks a plinth and so needs to be mounted on a base. Usually wood is used because it looks nice, but this allows the base to inject a coloration in the sound. I ran one of these for a while- but the better version which actually had its own plinth. Hold out for something better- you can find Empire machines for that sort of money...
