The Jacintha Tape while expensive is a true reference caliber tape, which you can also compare directly w LP again for those of you taping LP at 15 ips or even half that you are blowing thru $ on tape... the simple experiment is level matching at 1k with an spl meter, y’all doing that, right ?
after you have done that, hit play/Rec and pause... this will allow you to listen w deck electronics in loop
level matching....
you might discover you just like gain...
free experiment.....
|
BTW Jacintha at 15 ips is good, almost as good as 45 rpm.....but for less money because a well tuned B77 Mk3 ihalf track is a formidable beast
BTW if hitting your own tape, buy the calibration tape and learn how to adjust your machine...and she will drift.....
have fun enjoy the music....or the gain.... or the music
|
Anybody do the free experiment yet ? |
Half track that is why ( duh ) The Tape Project guys ( who also are bottlehead work w artists like Linda Ronatadt to release tape in that format..... at 15 ips
|
the first hit is free....... but IF you are contemplating 15 IPS then $800 for a tube head preamp is trivial.... |
a B77 with Bottlehead is a wonder, ask me how I know ? Uber glad to see ya going off the deeper end.
|
just seeing your update uber.....you will greatly enjoy the B77
IF you get around to it, the Bottlehead guys are worth looking into....
|
Bottlehead on Bainbridge Island makes some nice preamps just for your intended purpose....and they know great sound being the guys behind the Tape Project Tapes...
Uber IMO a nice Revox A-77 is the perfect low end deck you are talking about..they can be had in working shape for $200 ( or less as I recall Ralph just gave one away ).... nice carry handle built in, gentle tape handling, great sound..good enough for the Band and Dylan re The Basement Tapes.... what would you like to talk about ? I use one when scouting a new acoustic space on visit #2, after the Zoom6

@benjie Yes , studios will often use a RtR to fatten up and compress a track we do it with electric guitar, Fender Rhodes quite a bit. you can hear this across the whole multi track mix on The Teskey Brothers- Half Mike Harvest the CD has all of the dirt, overdrive, distortion, clipping present in the LP this is also a stellar album and work perfect at capturing the sound of an era enjoy the music |
My goal is a faithful recreation of the original event hence my heavy investment in microphones, preamps, linear PSU for phantom power, direct into a much better than stock RtR and A2D converters, a fantastic DAC, etc i sponsor via patronage a recording studio and touring artist i have a decent grip on what unamplified music sounds like along with all the tape artifacts and lack of high frequency fidelity that more than 4 posters to this thread have mentioned- looks like they have an spl meter and can do a fair a/b the homework I mentioned will help you understand the loudness ( gain ) switch in your tape loop not trying to drag you down
|
Actually you don’t need to waste $ on every cap, try bypassing but if you insist my two Revox use Wima with Coherent in bypass
of course your entire signal chain will benefit from this... your DAC, phono preamp, etc all the way out to and including Speakers
you have changed those also, right ????? |
Love being lectured by someone who does not even own a deck is there an ignore button on Audiogon ?
any of the zealots complete the homework assignment of listening to your RtR electronics sans tape to discern which part you like or would that strain the flat earth society ?
fun enjoy the music!!!!! |
which is why my little zoom 6 w SD card can outperform MANY high end CD transports....
|
You might give a listen to any number of Sheffield releases available in both DtD and treasury ( from Tape ) versions. And CD for that matter
anybody try the free experiment with your deck electronics in the loop yet ? Not that hard and might save you a lot of money on tape.....
|
Created a thread in the music section so the RtR fans can post what they are listening to.... on RtR tape of course....
enjoy the music !!!!!!
|
After you level match try discerning if you just like your deck electronics or your deck electronics on recorded tape....
|
@cleeds the 20a is a formidable sounding deck right out of the box
i suspect some of the replicant is better posters might benefit from a better DAC..but who is to argue with the news as fact in so subjective a hobby ?
I will try the theory out...a NEW use for the Leica...
print out a 300 x 300 photo and the use film to improve the detail !!!!
i wonder IF it is not 2 late to save Kodak ?
have fun, that is after all the KEY |
Uber: Ampex is good!
yes the recorders of LP are hearing gain and a bit of EQ effect, I figured this out s my German 4 track Dokorder and Denon TT In 1978... it made A needle drop of The Band - Rock of Ages “ jucier” as you say Bill... louder is better is HOW the brain is wired... i figured it out... but it came with some minus....
i would take a Revox B-77x, the poor mans Studer over many other decks, especially when considering parts availability.. but sure Studer is the Pro line ( which machine is more likely to be worn thin ??? )
Revox... even the lowly A-77 was Good enough for Dylan and The Band ( basement tapes )....and it comes with a carry handle, but typically not high speed...
i will say Royers into Fern into Revox at high speed can edge out the same chain into a WADIA 17, etc in some dimension...
the desire to know caused my journey...
ymmv
have fun

New tape = 2 choices buy the big box and save Me I use ATR in my mobile rack w Revox B-77 ( high speed half track iec) as for gear, it’s a bit like a wood boat, initial purchase price is low compared to lifecycle and ancillary costs... demag, calibration tape, maintenance, blank tape, etc.... some glorious sound possible and ya might go off the deep end of fun check out The Tape Project there are also links there to the wider community of tape heads... have fun |
