Question For Owners Of Triode Lab Amps

I am trying to decide on either a Triode Lab 2a3 SET amp(mono-blocks) or a 45 SET based amp/mono-blocks. I definitely have decided to buy one of these superb amplifiers made in Canada. Though cost dictates that I buy used. I have owned about five previous 2a3 amplifiers. I have less, but some experience with 45 based amps.

In my experience, all 2a3 amplifier designs have that famous clarity. However, some can tend, overall, to the lean side, and do not have that golden midrange magic that most are seeking in a SET. Other 2a3's I've owned and/or heard do offer that magical midrange. I'm trying to determine where Triode Lab 2a3's fall in this area.

I would greatly appreciate comments by owners or previous owners of Triode Lab 2a3's. Or, especially those who have heard/owned, or has significant experience with both a Triode Lab 2a3 and 45 based amplifier. Thanks for any assistance, it's greatly appreciated.

I own and use both, the Triode Lab 45 SET mono amps and the Triode Lab 2A3 SET mono amps. The link below will take you to our use of the Triode Lab 2A3 amps a show so you can read what was said about the sound. I find the 2A3 amps to be a bit more relaxed sounding and the 45 amps to be a bit more lively in our systems. Unfortunately it's not that simple because Frank has different output transformers and other parts to choose from which alters the sound a bit as does the choice of tubes (the whole tube set). Make sure your speakers are truly high sensitivity. Frank can talk you through how parts and tube affect the sound.

Mike,

I remembered your message in the 2a3 discussion here in the forum, and that you had used both in shows. I was hoping to hear from you. Thanks for the insight!
