I have been pleased with the voicing on the BHK pre by PS audio.  They are around used for the low side of your budget and service is available if needed.  

Thanks 12many, PS Audio preamps are a good buy and from what I have read/heard are good sounding units. 

I was also going to mention the Aric Motherload, but you’d probably want the XL version that is balanced and is a little pricier than the Raven so tough choice.  Both end game preamps IMHO.
